GSM KPI Analysis: Presented By: Bhupendra Jha

This document summarizes key performance indicators (KPIs) for GSM network analysis. It discusses SDCCH and TCH service rates, congestion rates, call drop rates, traffic Erlang, radio switch rate, assignment success rates, and handover success rates. Causes of low KPI values are explored, such as insufficient capacity, interference, coverage issues, and improper parameter settings. Solutions for improving KPIs include adding new base stations, adjusting thresholds and load balancing, improving frequency plans to reduce interference, and replacing faulty equipment.

GSM KPI Analysis

Presented By:
Bhupendra Jha
Major KPI
 SDCCH Service Rate ( 100%)
 SDCCH Congestion ( < 5%)
 TCH Service Rate (100%)
 TCH Congestion( including and Excluding Handover) (< 5%)
 Call Drop Rate (<2%)
 Traffic Erl.
 Radio Switch Rate ( More is Better).
 TCH Assignment and Allocation Failure (< 5%)
 Handover Success Rate (>95%)
SDCCH and TCH Service Rate
 These two Index is due to unavailable SDCCH
and TCH time Slots.
 It indicates the Service Status of Our Network.
 It mainly due to Faulty TRX, Down Site or Link
between TRX and BSC lost.
SDCCH Congestion
 Insufficient capacity
 Interference
 Inappropriate Parameter Settings ( e.g. CRO,
CRH, Periodic Location Update Timer)
TCH CONGESTION
 Insufficient Capacity
 Large Interference
 Coverage
 Inappropriate Parameter Settings ( cell
Reselection, CRH, Min MS Access level)
Parameters to reduce congestion
• 1. TCH Traffic Busy Threshold(%)
2. RXLEV_ACCESS_MIN
3.Balance Traffic Allowed
4. Load HO Allowed
Call Drop
 Call Drop due to Radio Link Failure
 Call Drop due to LAPD Link Failure
 Call Drop Due to Handover Failure
Call Drop Reasons
 Equipment Hardware Fault
 Poor radio Signal, Causing Poor coverage
 Interference
 Inappropriate Parameter settings (handover
Parameter)
 Unstable transmission
TCH Assignment Success
After BSC receives the ChannelActivationAck message during
the channel allocation process, it sends the IMMEDIATE
ASSIGN COMMAND message on downlink SDCCH, and it is
recorded as a TCH assignment attempt. The TCH assignment is
mainly performed between BSC and MS, and BTS only
transparently transfers relevant commands. After BSC receives
the Establish Indication message from BTS, the TCH
assignment succeeds; otherwise, the TCH assignment fails.
This process mainly involves the radio interface and is
interfered by indefinite factors, thus the assignment failure
rate is high.
Low TCH Assignment Success Rate
• Probable Reasons
• 1.No Dominant Serving Cell
Action:Check coverage plots, perform drive tests.
Solution:Add new base station.

2.Severe Congestion on the TCH
Action:Check failed TCH allocation for assignment due to congestion.
Check failed TCH allocation for handover due to congestion .
Check TCH congestion.
• 3.Interference
Interference, disturbance on BCCH or target TCH frequency.
Action:Check Interference.
Solution:Improve frequency plan and decrease interference.

4.Faulty Transceiver
Action:Check BTS Error Log.
Solution:Replace or repair faulty equipment.

5.Low Output Power

Action:Check set output power parameters and the actual transceiver output power.
Solution: Increase output power or replace faulty transceiver.
TCH Allocation failure
After the channel is requested successfully from
the database, BSC sends the Channel Activation
FOR TCH message to BTS, that is, TCH allocation
attempt. After BSC receives the
ChannelActivationAck message from BTS, the
TCH allocation succeeds. If BSC receives the
ChannelActivationNack message or does not
receive the ChannelActivationAck due to
timeout, it indicates that the TCH allocation fails.
Traffic Erl
 Refers to Erlang B table ( at 2% GOS )
 Must Have the available TCH no during Busy
Hour.
Total channel in busy time = total TCH/H + total
TCH/F
Total Traffic = total channel in busy time/
Statistic Period.
Handover Success Rate:
 Handover Success Rate = no. of handover
success/no of handover request.
 Related to Call Drop.
 Related to Quality of the Network.
 Must be Greater than 95%
Problem Discussion
Question: On June 20 it is found that, the call
drop rate of a site is more than 7%, from past
it increase significantly.

Predict the Answer ?????

Problem Discussion
Question: On June 20 it is found that, the call drop rate of a site is more than 7%, from past it
increase significantly.

1) Performance Data shows the Call drop is due to

radio link failure.
2) Interference found in Performance Data not in DT.
3) No co-channel and Adjacent channel
4) No alarm, no handover parameter, no missing
neighbor.
Predict the Answer ?????
