it will be done, and how it will be
done.

hierarchical levels of employees, both
professionally and socially.

how they will be evaluated, they can’t do their
jobs well.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS
COMMUNICATION PROCESS

 Sender is the individual who initiates a message

and is often called the communicator or source
of communication.

 In order to convey meaning, the sender must

begin encoding which means translating
information into a message.

 A channel of must also

communication
selected, which is the manner in which be
message is sent the
COMMUNICATION PROCESS

 Decoding is conducted by the receiver. Here,

the receiver interprets the sender’s message
and tries to understand it in the best possible
manner.

 The receiver is the individual or individuals to

whom the message is directed.

 Feedback is the final link in the chain of the

communication process. After receiving a
message, the receiver responds in some way
and signals that response to the sender.
COMMUNICATION PROCESS
COMMON MISSTEPS IN
COMMUNICATION
• The first misstep can occur when the information
to be communicated is not encoded correctly.
• Missteps also occur during decoding when the
receiver interprets the message differently than
the sender intended
• Because feedback is a message sent in the
opposite direction, from the receiver to the
sender, all these problems can occur during
feedback.
TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

Based on means of delivering the

message

Based on purpose of
communication

communicator and the audience may raise question
and add information, ideas and opinions on the
subject.

– several people communicate when one person
with same time at the
COMMUNICATION NETWORK

A communication network refers to how

information flows within the organization.
Information within an organization generally
flows through a system, rather than being a
free flow. Communication networks may be
formal or informal.
COMMUNICATION NETWORK

formal communication network is one which
is created by management and described

3. Horizontal Communication – This type of communication
is also known as “lateral” communication. It may be defined
as communication that takes place between co-workers in the
same department, or in different departments, with different
areas of responsibility
COMMUNICATION NETWORK

Informal Communication Network –

outside of the formal system. Informal
systems can connect almost anyone in an
organization to anyone else. They skip over
hierarchical levels and between departments
and functions.
COMMUNICATION NETWORK

Informal Communication Network is also known as

grapevine communication because it is
unstructured and not under complete control of
management, it moves through the organization in
every direction.
COMMUNICATION NETWORK

Types of Informal Communication Network

1. Single Strand Chain – In this type of
grapevine communication the information
passes through a number of persons like a
chain.
COMMUNICATION NETWORK

2. Gossip – In this type of grapevine

communication one person actively conveys
information to other persons around him. A
circle or wheel-like figure is formed in this
communication.
COMMUNICATION NETWORK

3. Probability Chain - It is a random process in

which information may move from one person to any
other person or persons according to law of
probability. Naturally, in this type of communication,
some people of the organization will be informed and
some others will remain outside the arena of the
communication.
COMMUNICATION NETWORK

4. Cluster Chain - Cluster network is an informational

network where someone first tells the message to the
selected individuals and those selected individuals
pass the same information to other selected
individuals and the process continue in the same
way.
