DUAL AND COMBAT SPORTS

UNIT 3
Dual Sport
 Like individual sport is
played with another individual
 In doubles, the team consists
of two people
 Skills maybe learned in class
 Actual styles learned by
joining lessons outside school
Combat Sport
 a competitive contact sport
with one-one combat
 refers to any martial art or
activity
 objective is to display the art
of fighting
 such as striking, kicking,
hitting, throwing, or punching
Began in the 1890’s as a popular game
Did not stay long and died down
Table Tennis Became popular again in the 1920’s
Original name was “ping-pong”

What is Table Tennis?
 Played with cork balls and vellum rackets
Wooden rackets covered with rubber “pips” which was the most
popular type used until the 1950’s
Changed into a racket with a covering of sponge material which was
dominated by Japan during 1950’s

Terms to Remember:
Serve – begins with the ball being tossed from the
palm of the hand and struck by the racket
Server – the player due to strike the ball in a rally
Stroke – any shot used in the game
Rally - hitting the ball back and forth
Forehand – right of the elbow for right hander, left for
a left hander
Backhand – left of the left elbow for a right hander,
right for the left hander
Block – a quick off-the-bounce return of an aggressive
drive
Drive – a stroke that has medium to fast forward speed
 Jogging
Drills for Lead-up Games Stretching arms, swinging up to the right and to the left
Practice serving and receiving the ball on a tennis Twisting trunk to the right and to the left aiming for a forehand
and backhand strokes

Two Basic Stance

Attention Stance – used


in preparation for
courtesy or bowing at commencement

Forward Stance – done with frontal
striking or blocking techniques

What is Tae Kwon Do?

• An art of self-defense
• Originated in Korea
• One of the famous form of martial arts in
the world
• Tae means foot
• Kwon means hand or fist
• Do means art
• Literally, taekwondo means “the way of the
foot and fist”
• Name has been used since 1955
Techniques to Study and Learn:

Stance or Sogui - attention stance


Hand Attacks – fighting stance

Kicks or Chagi – all kicks can be executed

Patterns or Poomsae – important in


competitions
Pattern

• Series of movement
• Beginners do single patterns
• Solo and pattern are the two
types of Taekwondo
• Graded on accuracy, posture,
realism spirit, decorum, and form
• Hand strikes are performed at
close distance

What is Karate?

• Ancient martial art built around


self-defense
• Karate is a Japanese word for
“empty hands”
• Originated in Okinawan Islands
• Began as “te” or hand, a fighting
style used by natives of Ryukyu
Islands
• Later introduced in China
The word “Karate”
• Combination of two Japanese characters
• Kara means “empty”
• Te means “hand”
• Do means “way”
• Karatedo can now be described as a total way of life
• Became part of physical education at the intermediate level on Okinawa
in 1905
Karate Moves
• Kata – form or pattern
• Kihon – basic technique
• Bunkai – analysis or
Karate Moves disassembly
• Kumite – means sparring
