Mole Concept: Relative Atomic Mass and Conversions

The document discusses mole concept, relative atomic mass, and conversions between mass, moles, and particles. It defines relative atomic mass as the average mass of one atom of an element compared to one atom of carbon-12. Relative molecular mass is the sum of the relative atomic masses of the elements in a compound. Molar mass is numerically equal to relative molecular mass but is expressed in grams per mole.

Relative Atomic Mass and Conversions

Relative Atomic Mass (Ar)
Relative atomic mas of a substance is the average mass of 1 atom
of the element compared with the mass of 1 atom of carbon-12
which is taken on a scale of exactly 12 units.

RAM is only used when working with elements

For example:
RAM of carbon = 12
RAM of zinc = 65
RAM of copper = 64
Relationship between mass, moles and
particles/entities
Avogadro’s number x # of moles

(# of particles / Avogadro’s number) x mass of 1 mole of substance

Relative molecular mass (Mr)
The relative molecular mass of a substance is the sum of the
relative atomic masses of the elements present in a compound. The
symbol for relative formula mass is Mr.

The molar mass of a substance is the mass of 1 mole expressed in

gram.

Relative molecular mass and molar mass are numerically equal BUT
molar mass has units i.e grams and relative molecular mass has no
units
Eg. RMM of water = 18 Molar mass of water = 18g
