Seismic Retrofitting

Base isolation is a seismic design approach that uses flexible isolation bearings installed between a structure and its foundation to reduce earthquake forces. During an earthquake, the bearings allow the structure to move independently from the ground, isolating it from ground shaking. Common bearing types include elastomeric, lead-rubber, and high-damping natural rubber bearings. Experiments show that base isolated buildings experience as little as 25% of the accelerations of comparable fixed-base buildings, reducing potential earthquake damage. Base isolation is an effective technique for seismic protection of bridges and buildings.
