Electrical Machines 1: Prepared By-Mohammad Zohurul Islam

The document provides an overview of DC generators. It describes the basic components and construction of a simple loop generator, including the magnetic field and conductor. It then explains the working principle where rotation of the conductor in the magnetic field produces induced electromotive force (emf). The document outlines the essential parts of a practical generator like the magnetic frame, pole cores, armature core and windings, commutator and brushes. It also discusses different types of generators classified by their excitation method, including separately excited, shunt, series and compound generators. Finally, it briefly mentions losses that occur in a generator.

DC Generator
INTRODUCTION
• An electrical generator is a machine
which converts mechanical energy into
electrical energy.
• The energy conversion is based on the
principle of the production of
dynamically induced e.m.f.
• Whenever a conductor cuts magnetic
flux, dynamically induced e.m.f is
prduced in it accordding to Faraday’s law DC Generator
of electromagnetic induction. This e.m.f
causes a current to flow if the conductor
circuit is closed.
Construction of Simple Loop Generator

• Two basic essential parts are required to construct a simple loop

generator.
1. Magnetic Field
2. Conductor

Essential Parts of Practical Generator and their Functions
1. Magnetic Frame or Yoke
2. Pole Core and Pole Shoes
3. Pole Coils or Field Coils
4. Armature Core
5. Armature Windings or Conductors

Types of Generators
Generators are usually classified according to the way in which their field
magnet are excited. They may be divided into 2 broad categories as
Separately-excited and Self-excited generators.
1. Separately-excited generators are those whose field magnets are energised
from an independent external source of dc current as shown in the figure.

2. Self-excited generators
Self-excited generators are those whose field magnets are energised by the
current produced by the generator themselves. They can be further classified
into a) shunt, b) series and c) compound generators.

Types of Generators
Compound wound generator is a combination of a few series and a few shunt
windings and can be either short shunt or long shunt as shown in the figure
below.
