Seismic Analysis of Tall Structures by Concrete Diagrid Structures Using Response Spectrum Method

This document summarizes a study on analyzing the seismic performance of 20-story concrete diagrid structures using response spectrum analysis. A diagrid structure is modeled in ETABS with a 65.6° diagonal angle. Response parameters like time period, displacements, drifts, shears, and base shear are compared between the diagrid structure and a braced frame tube structure considering Indian seismic design codes. The aim is to validate how diagrid structures perform better in resisting lateral loads and have more efficient use of materials for tall buildings.

INTRODUCTION
• Diagrid are the array of triangles formed as a framework, made by the intersection of distinct
materials like timber, steel or concrete. Diagrids are capable to resist both gravity and lateral loads
acting on the building. Diagrid is mainly depends on optimal angle of the diagrid in this both
moment and shear are carried by triangular members. In diagrid vertical columns are eliminated
and carry shear by axial action and its resists gravity and lateral loads by triangular configuration.
Diagrid structures are more effective than the normal conventional structures its minimizing the
shear deformation. Diagrids are able to carry gravity and lateral loads and distribute them in a very
uniform and regular pattern. In addition by the usage of diagonals lesser amount of material is
used. Due to elimination of columns much space is available to make the structure look more
flexible and stiffness.
• DIAGRID STRUCTURES:

Diagrid is an exterior structural system in which all perimeter vertical columns are

eliminated and consists of only inclined columns on the façade of the building. Shear and over-
turning moment developed are resisted by axial action of these diagonals compared to bending of
vertical columns in framed tube structure.

• BRACE FRAME TUBE STRUCTURE:

A braced frame is a structural system designed to resist wind and earthquake forces.

Members in a braced frame are not allowed to sway laterally.

DIAGRID STRUCTURE BRACE FRAME TUBE STRUCTURE
AIM
The aim of this diagrid structural system is one of the most effective systems due to
its efficiency and flexibility in architectural planning. In this system vertical columns of the building
are eliminated.

• To develop a new technology for expanding a buildings vertically and a denser city has more
energy efficient because the energy consumed for transferring electricity can be minimized.

• To study the behavior of structure response and diagrid structure is more effective in lateral load
resistance seismic and wind analysis.
OBJECTIVE:
• To analyze and design of concrete diagrid structure using Etabs.

• To study the behavior of structure by using response spectrum method.

• To perform seismic analysis of concrete diagrid structure by using response spectrum method.

• Seismic performance of comparing concrete diagrid structure and brace frame tube structure by
studying Time period, storey displacement, storey drift, storey shear and base shear considering 20
storey with Zone IV.
SCOPE
Study the concept of diagrid structural system and attaining more flexibility in
planning interior space and facade of building. Response spectrum analysis is considered for the
seismic analysis IS1893(Part1):2016. Another study is made on the diagrid structure with compared
to brace frame tube structure.

Analysis and design of diagrid structure can be done using response

spectrum method. In this diagrid structure top lateral deflection is decreases due to the diagonal
elements angles gradually increases. Etabs software is used to validate the results.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Now a days the rate of population is increasing day by day due to which the
access for land is decreasing. Due to this tall structures are preferred. It is known that effect of lateral
loads is more on tall structures because with the increase in height of structure the effect of lateral
loads increases they had a significant advantage interms of height from greater height diagrid
structures are more effective to resist lateral loads [Korsavi et. al 2014]. Uniform diagonal angle
between 60° to70° was the most efficient under seismic loads as well as gravity loads indicates the
lateral displacement is high in conventional buildings compared to diagrid structure for a different
angle. It is caused due to the lateral forces acting on the structure [Moon et al 2017]. Diagrids need
less material than other tall building decreasing the diagonal angles along the height. The shear lag
phenomenon can be observed in diagrids like other tall buildings [Moon 2018].

METHODOLOGY
• The major current work is to analyze the performance of G+20 storey structure with height of
about 60meters. Response Spectrum analysis consider for seismic analysis as per IS 1893(Part 1)-
2016.

• Another comparative study was made on the diagrid structure is compared with brace frame tube
structures. Then the results are obtained interms of response.

• A diagrid structure 20 storey building of size 30mx25m storey height 3m and plan area 750m2 is
considered for the analysis and design.

• ETABS software is used for the analysis and design. Indian Standard IS 1893(Part1):2016 is
adopted for the seismic analysis of structure.
