Unit 1 SPC

This document provides an introduction to statistical process control (SPC). It discusses key quality philosophers like Deming and Shewhart. It also outlines dimensions of quality and common quality practices like total quality management and six sigma. Finally, it summarizes that SPC applies statistical methods to monitor processes and ensure consistent production, with the goal of improving quality, productivity, and reducing waste.

Introduction

• Quality in simple terms is ‘fitness to use’

• The term quality means different things to different people
• Quality is also defined as "conformance to specifications"

Statistical Process Control

• Statistical process control (SPC) is the application of statistical

methods to the monitoring and control of a process to ensure that
it operates at its full potential to produce conforming product.
• SPC is used to monitor the consistency of processes that are used
to produce a product as designed.

History of SPC

• SPC was pioneered by Walter A. Shewhart in the early 1920s

• W. Edwards Deming later applied SPC methods in the United
States during World War II
• Deming was also instrumental in introducing SPC methods to
Japanese industry after the war had ended
• Initially, SPC was most often used in manufacturing companies
• Later, in 1989, the Software Engineering Institute introduced the
notion that SPC can be usefully applied to non-manufacturing
processes, such as software engineering processes

Benefits derived from SPC

• It aims to get and keep processes under control

• SPC seeks to improve process and overall quality by
 improving product quality
 improving productivity
 streamlining process
 reducing wastage
 reducing emissions
 improving customer service, etc.
