Chapter 1 NDT

This document provides an introduction to non-destructive testing (NDT), including a definition, brief history, major types of NDT, applications and advantages/disadvantages. It also discusses codes and standards from organizations like ASTM and SNT-TC-1A that provide guidelines for NDT. Finally, it mentions NDT qualification/certification and gives a basic overview of common NDT methods like visual, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, radiography, ultrasonic and eddy current testing.

1.1 History
WHAT IS NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING?
A general definition of nondestructive testing
(NDT) is an examination, test, or evaluation
performed on any type of test object without
changing or altering that object in any way, in
order to determine the absence or presence of
conditions or discontinuities that may have an
effect on the usefulness or serviceability of that
object.
◦ In contrast to NDT, other tests are destructive in
nature and are therefore done on a limited
number of samples ("lot sampling"), rather than
on the materials, components or assemblies
actually being put into service.

◦ Today modern nondestructive tests are used in

manufacturing, fabrication and in-service
inspections to ensure product integrity and
reliability, to control manufacturing processes,
lower production costs and to maintain a
uniform quality level.

Major Types of NDT

 Detection of surface flaws

Visual
Magnetic Particle Inspection
Fluorescent Dye Penetrant Inspection

 Detection of internal flaws

Radiography
Ultrasonic Testing
Eddy current Testing
Applications of Non-Destructive Testing
The Advantages of Non-destructive Testing
◦ Safety issues can be identified
◦ It provides reliability
◦ It is cost effective
◦ It offers reassurance

The Disadvantages of Non-destructive Testing

◦ On some non-destructive test methods, only relatively non-porous surfaces
can be inspected
◦ Some test methods require electricity
◦ Some can also be affected by variations in magnetic permeability
◦ Some tests are only effective on materials that are conductive
