Thrusia A. Williams: Technology Assignment

This document provides instructions for teaching students about multiplication using arrays. It includes objectives to apply the commutative property of multiplication using arrays, understand multiplication through manipulatives and array models, and use mathematical strategies to solve problems. Students will use online applets and games to build arrays and supply multiplication answers to further their understanding of using visual representations like arrays to solve multiplication problems.

Multiplication Using

Arrays

Thrusia A. Williams
Technology Assignment
TEKS/NCTM/CCRS expectations:
 §111.6. Grade 4,
(1)  Mathematical process standards. The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and
demonstrate mathematical understanding. The student is expected to:

(B)  use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information,
formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating
the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution;

(C)  select tools, including real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and
technology as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and number
sense as appropriate, to solve problems;

(4) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to develop
and use strategies and methods for whole number computations and decimal sums and
differences in order to solve problems with efficiency and accuracy. The student is expected
to:

(C) represent the product of 2 two-digit numbers using arrays, area models, or equations,
including perfect squares through 15 by 15;

(D) use strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to multiply up to a
four-digit number by a one-digit number and to multiply a two-digit number by a two-digit
number. Strategies may include mental math, partial products, and the commutative,
associative, and distributive properties;
Lesson objective(s):

•The Student will apply their understanding of arrays to
the
Commutative Property of multiplication.

•Students will be able to understand the basic concept
of
multiplication and solve multiplication equations
using
manipulatives, technology and array models as a
tool.

•The student will use mathematical strategies to help

An array is an arrangement of a set of numbers or
objects in rows and columns. It helps you understand
calculations by displaying them visually. It can be really
useful when multiplying two numbers.

Arrays can be seen Columns

in everyday objects
like egg boxes and
bars of chocolate. Rows

An array
showing 4 x An array showing 2 x 4
2 will look will look like this
like this

4x2=8

2x4=8
Multiplying is the same as
repeated addition. This
array shows 3 x 5 but we
could also write this down
as 5 + 5 + 5

An array does not need to

use counters or dots. It
can be displayed using
different items - the
answer will be the same.
