Universities

• A university is an open paradigm of learning

without boundaries or limitations through
reflection, action, adventure, choice, corporation
and communication.
• University education is highly competitive and is
influenced by globalization and
internationalization. Today not only the politics
but also the ideas and capital are crossing borders
and spanning the world.
Background Statistics on Asia

• Area - 44,579,000 km2 (29.9% land area)

• Population – 4.05 Billion
(60% of world population)
• 59% of total population
is less than 34 years
• 5000+ universities

21st Century is being considered as Asian Century

Contemporary Universities of Asia

• Since 1980, access to higher education have grown more

dramatically in Asia than in any other area of the world.
• Among Asian, Malaysia is one of the world’s 11 most
preferred destinations. Around 691,954 international students
from more than 150 countries have chosen Malaysia as their
destination with majority of the student coming from
Indonesia, China, and the Middle East.
Contemporary Universities of Asia (Contd.)

• The education system also differs largely among different

Asian universities. Some are following annual exam
systems, others semester system and some are module
system.
• Criterion for recognition of one university by other
universities is not well established.
• Universities were state funded in past. Today university
education is becoming a good social business.
• Many private organizations are willing to invest in
universities.
Contemporary Universities of Asia (Contd.)

• Universities in past were involved in teaching and

research activities only while nowadays they are involved
in lifelong learning, research, knowledge transfer, social
inclusion, local and regional regeneration, civil and
cultural engagement.
• The larger developing nations of Asia - China and India -
have an ambitious agenda. Both these countries seek to
expand the capacity of their systems of higher education,
and China has done so dramatically since 1998.
Asian Ambitions: Building World-Class
Universities
• Having made tremendous progress in expanding access to
higher education, the leading nations of Asia have now set
their sights on an even more challenging goal: building
universities that stand in competition with the finest in the
world.
• Universities are recognizing the importance of university-
based scientific research in driving economic growth and
to impart intellectual breadth and critical-thinking skills to
solve problems, to innovate, and to lead.
Challenges ahead

• To create world-class capacity in education, the curriculum

must be broadened
• Need to focus on delivering quality education than
numbers
• Need to evolve Public Private Partnership (PPP) to meet
the industry and market demand
• Need refocus on emerging issues food security, climate
change, emergency preparedness and eco–friendly
technologies
