• Identify language used for speculating:
This person is probably a high-flying
executive in a large multinational company. She is likely to be involved in high-level decision-making, so she undoubtedly has a lot of power, high status and a large salary. She must work long hours and has to deal with a lot of stress. Over to you Look at the other jobs from page 40 and describe them. Use the following phrases and the ones from the previous slide to speculate about which aspects of working you associate with each of the jobs: 1. No doubt the Joneses will be there 2. It's unlikely that she'll come now 3. I bet / you can bet (that) they'll be late 4. I imagine (that) it'll be busy 5. The chances are that he'll win 6. There's no chance of them coming now 7. I wouldn't be surprised if it rained The 10 questions game • Work in groups of 4 or 5 • Your teacher will assign one person in each group a random job which will be kept secret from you • You can ask your team-mates 10 yes/no questions to try and find out what your job is • Trying to guess the job does not count as a questions but you can only try to guess three times! Gist reading • Quickly read the text in ex.2 from page 41. Ignore the gaps. • According to the extract, what is the answer to the last question from the previous slide? Pre-Listening Discussion You will hear a student, Jessica, giving a talk to her class about a project she has done on the co-operative movement (which is a modern alternative to the more traditional modes of employment). Before you listen, which of these statements do you agree with?
