What is Reading Comprehension?
• Comprehension is the understanding and interpretation of what is
read. To be able to accurately understand written material, children
need to be able to (1) decode what they read; (2) make connections
between what they read and what they already know; and (3) think
deeply about what they have read.
• Reading comprehension is as the level of understanding of a
text/message. This understanding comes from the interaction between
the words that are written, and how they trigger knowledge outside the
text/message.
Tips To Reading Text
• Your friends before your foes.
• Don’t use ‘special’ reading techniques.
Tips To Reading Text
• Read through the entire passage and the questions before you do
anything.
Tips To Reading Text
• Familiarize yourself with reading comprehension questions.
• Main Idea– Questions that ask for the central
thought or significance of the passage.
• Specific Details – Questions that asks for explicitly
stated ideas.
• Drawing Inferences – Questions that ask for a statement’s
intended meaning.
• Tone or Attitude – Questions that test your ability to
sense the emotional state of the author.
• Context Meaning – Questions that ask for the meaning
of a word depending on the context.
• Technique – Questions that ask for the method of
organization or the writing style of the author.
Main Idea and Supporting Details
The topic of a passage or paragraph is its subject. It’s the general idea
and can be summed up in a word or short phrase. On some standardized
tests, there is a short description of the passage if it’s taken from a
longer work. Make sure you read the description as it might state the
topic of the passage. If not, read the passage and ask yourself, “Who, or
what is this about?”
A volcano is a large mountain that opens up and shoots out lava in other words it is also
known as magma.Volcanoes are formed when the magma from within the earth’s upper
mantle works its way up to the surface. The main thing that causes this disaster is
earthquakes. The reason that earthquakes causes this horrific disaster is when the earthquake
is going on this causes the mountain to split, which therefore the magma starts to rise. How
this destructive disaster starts is because the magma starts off in the magma chamber which
is just underneath the earth’s crust, then past the main vent and finally past the crater. When
the Magma shoots past the crater it slides down and turns into lava, after a while the lava
turns into hard soled rock when it has cooled down.
In this paragraph:
What if the author doesn’t state the main idea in a topic sentence? The
passage will have an implied main idea. It’s not as difficult to find as it
might seem. Paragraphs are always organized around ideas. To find an
implied main idea, you need to know the topic and then find the
relationship between the supporting details. Ask yourself, “What is the
point the author is making about the relationship between the details?”
1. When the rain of hot ash blasts out of a volcano the rain of hot ash can kill
many people from the hotness of the ash. Not only that but roads, buildings,
fields and houses can get covered with thick volcanic ash. Ash can also be
blasted out of a volcano and when ash hits the roof of a house it is most likely
collapse.
In this paragraph:
The topic is Volcano
The main idea is effects of a volcano
2. Volcanoes are most commonly in Indonesia, Hawaii and New Zealand and even around
the edges of the Pacific Ocean which is commonly referred to the Ring of fire. The Ring of
fire is a whole group of volcanoes around the Pacific plate and they are the most deadly and
dangerous volcanoes.
The main idea is where volcanoes occur

You can feel the rumbling of volcano. This destructive volcano will start to shake an hour before
erupting. You can also see warning signs on radios, TVs and phones and also you can see the ash starting to
rain from the volcano.

In May 1883, a volcano on the Indonesian island of Krakatoa burst into life, sending
ash, volcanic gases and pumice into the air. On 27 August, there were four giant explosions,
the third of which was one of the loudest ever recorded. It was said to have been heard 4,000
km away. The explosion blew the tiny island apart, as the volcano callapsed in on itself.
36,000 dead.

Meaning From Context
Often in reading comprehension questions, you are asked for the definition of a
word, which you have to infer from the surrounding text, called “meaning in
context.” Here are a few examples with step-by-step solutions, and a few tips
and tricks to answering meaning from context questions.
There are literally thousands and thousands of words in the English language. It
is impossible for us to know what every single one of them means, but we also
don’t have time to Google a definition every time we read a word we don’t
understand! Even the smartest person in the world comes across words they
don’t know, but luckily we can use context
clues to help us determine what things actually mean.
You can feel the rumbling of volcano. This destructive volcano will start to shake an
hour before erupting. You can also see warning signs on radios, TVs and phones and also
you can see the ash starting to rain from the volcano.
