Calculating Spring Constant

This document discusses calculating the spring constant and force applied to springs. It provides the formula for calculating force applied to a spring based on spring constant and extension. It then gives examples of calculating force for springs with different spring constants and extensions. Finally, it discusses using a graph of load vs extension to calculate values related to a spring's properties.

Physics Equation Practice

Introduction
Spring constant is a measure of the stiffness of a spring up to its limit of proportionality or elastic
limit. The spring constant is different for different elastic objects. For a given spring and other
elastic objects, the extension is directly proportional to the force applied.

Example Remember the three-step process:

What is the force applied to a spring with a • Write down the equation you are going to

0.5m? • Substitute the quantities from the question
• Force applied to a spring = Spring constant into your formula and carry out the
X extension calculation.
• Force =10N/m x 0.5m • Write down the answer and don't forget to
• = 5N use the correct unit.
