Formatting technical reports


Headings, chapters and sections

 Headings are standard features of technical


documents.
 Have the ff. advantages:
 Provide organizational overview of the
document
 Show logical development of ideas

 Show hierarchical relationship of ideas
(headings, sub-headings)
 Consistency: Make sure that your headings at
each level are consistent in design (font, size,
colour, indentation, etc)
 Increase readability of the document by
providing breaks and white space.

 Specificity: Use descriptive heading that
informs the reader the content of that section.

Avoid too long and many headings that


may confuse the reader
 Note:
 Do not ‘stack’ headings one below another;
It must have at least a sentence of information
below it
 Do not ‘overuse’ headings; Every sentence does
not require its own heading, nor its paragraph.
Header and Footer
 Are special purpose sections that contain
constant, variable and runtime fields
 Contain information regarding the content of
report intended audience
 Header used to display images, titles, etc
 Footer display page number and some
important informations
