Angles

The document defines different types of angles and how to measure them. It discusses right angles, acute angles, obtuse angles, complementary angles, supplementary angles, vertical angles, corresponding angles, alternate interior angles, and alternate exterior angles. When two parallel lines are intersected by a transversal, corresponding angles are congruent, as are alternate interior angles and alternate exterior angles.

ANGLES

 Define and name an angle

Measure an angle
OBJECTIVES
ANGLE
■ Made up of two non-collinear rays with the
same start point.
■ The start point is called the vertex.
■ The two rays are called the sides of the angle.
■ The angle is represented by a symbol ∠ along
w i t h a l e t t e r.

symbol ∠ . The middle point is always
the vertex.

o This angle can be denoted as:
G
∠GOD
∠DOG
O D ∠O

o An angle divides the plane containing it into two

regions:
o the interior and the exterior of the angle.

o Angle measures are between 0°and 180°.
Types Of Angles
There are four main types of angles.

An angle bisector is a line that
divides an angle into two equal
parts.

The line AD bisects the angle CAB or

(angle A) in two equal parts and is
called the angle bisector.
IF LINE AD BISECT A RIGHT ANGLE INTO TWO EQUAL PARTS,
WHAT IS THE ANGLE OF EACH BISECTED ANGLES?

The line AD bisects the right angle into two equal parts.
Each bisected angle is 45°.
Complimentary Angles

Congruent Angles
Two angles that have the same measure are called congruent
angles.

A D

Congruent angles have the same size and shape.

Adjacent Angles
Two angles that have a common vertex and a common ray
are called adjacent angles.

Vertical Angles
Vertically opposite angles are pairs of angles formed by two
lines intersecting at a point.

Pairs Of Angles Formed by a Transversal
A line that intersects two or more lines at different points is
called a transversal.

transversal are supplementary
o Exterior angles on the same side of the
transversal are supplementary.
