Ring & Ball Test

(Softening Point)

CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

VEB3042: CIVIL ENGINEERING LAB 3

Highway Laboratory Testing

17th May 2021

1
 Used to determine the softening point and temperature susceptibilities
of bitumen by evaluating the bitumen sample contained in a brass ring
RING AND impacted by a steel ball in a heated water bath or glycerol bath.
BALL TEST  The softening point interprets the equi-viscous temperature at which the
(SOFTENING bitumen changes from semi solid to liquid state.
POINT)  Water bath is suitable to test bitumen samples with softening point
<80°C whereas glycerol bath for >80 °C.

 The test is conducted as per ASTM D36 standard procedures.

2
In this test, steel ball of weight 3.5g is placed on samples of bitumen
GENERAL contained within the ring. The softening point is temperature
DISCUSSION recorded at which the steel ball touches the base plate 25mm below
the ring.

APPARATUS

Ring & ball in water bath Thermometer

4
Heat the sample to a temperature between 75°C and 100 °C, above expected softening
point. Fill the rings with sufficient molten sample to allow excess above top of each
ring once cooled. Let cool for 30mins and cut away excess with warm knife.

PROCEDURE
: Sample
preparation

5
1. Assemble the apparatus with rings, thermometer and ball guides in position and fill water
bath up to 50mm above upper surface of rings with freshly boiled distilled water (5°C).

2. Maintain the bath at the temperature of 5°C for 15 min and using forceps place a ball,
previously cooled to a temperature of 5°C, in each ball guide.

PROCEDURE
: Apparatus
setup

6
1. Heat the bath and stir the liquid so that the temperature rises at a uniform rate of 5 ± 0.5°C
per minute until the bitumen softens and allows the ball to pass through the ring.

2. Record for each ring and ball, the temperature shown by the thermometer at the instant the
sample surrounding the ball touches the bottom plate.

Note: If the difference between values obtained in the duplicate determinations exceeds 1°C
PROCEDURE repeat the test.

: Observe and
record
