    WHAT IS IMPACT TEST
    ▪ An impact test is used to observe the mechanics that a material will exhibit when it
    experiences a shock loading that causes the specimen to immediately deform, fracture or
    rupture completely.
    ▪ This test require a known weight of and a known height so that it collides with the specimen
    with a sudden force.
    ▪ This collision between the weight and specimen generally results in the destruction of the
    specimen but the transfer of energy between the two is used to determine the fracture
    mechanics of the material.
    PURPOSE
     The purpose of an impact test is to determine the ability of the material to absorb
    energy during a collision.
    This energy may be used to determine the materials
     Toughness
     impact strength
     fracture resistance

    These values are important for the selection of materials that will be used in
    applications that require the material to undergo very rapid loading processes
    TYPES OF IMPACT TEST
    Pendulum impact test
    ▪ Pendulum impact testing is performed to determine the amount of energy dissipated during
    fracture of a material under severe loading conditions. The importance of the fracture energy
    was proved by several catastrophic failures of steel constructions.
    Drop weight impact test
    ▪ A drop weight impact test typically determines a material’s resistance to a sudden external
    force. This type of test is also applicable for pipe testing where the impact resistance of
    thermoplastic pipes is measured. 
    PENDULUM IMPACT TEST
    For a pendulum impact test the three most popular types, these are :
    ▪ Charpy V-notch test
    ▪ Izod test
    ▪ Tensile Impact test

    These three tests all essentially determine the same characteristics of the material but differ
    in the orientation of the test sample which causes the sample to be stressed in different
    directions and involve a known weight released from a known height colliding with the
    specimen in its test fixture.

    Test Procedure
    ▪ A Charpy V-notch specimen is placed
    across parallel jaws in the impact-
    testing machine.
    ▪ The pointer is set up to its maximum
    value.
    ▪ The hammer is released from the initial
    height downward towards the sample.
    ▪ Observations and the energy absorbed
    are recorded and tabulated.
    ▪ Steps 1-3 are repeated for another
    specimen.

    machine.

    A vertical dropped-weight impact test machine has a dropped-


    weight barrel vertically supported on upper and lower support brackets.
    The dropped-weight barrel is chambered to receive a dropped-
    weight assembly having a latch pin at its upper end, a damping unit in the
    middle, and a tup at its lower end.
