What is pollution?
• the introduction of contaminants into natural environment
that causes adverse changes
• the action of polluting especially by environmental
contamination with man-made waste
• can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally
occurring contaminants

Survey Results
Your Picture Here and Send to Back Air pollution kills an estimated seven
million people worldwide every year.
WHO data shows that 9 out of 10 people
breathe air that exceeds WHO guideline
limits (PM2.5 should not exceed 10 µg/m3)
containing high levels of pollutants, with
low- and middle-income countries
suffering from the highest exposures.

POLLUTION
Air pollution is a mix of hazardous substances

from both human-made and natural sources.
Air pollution consists of chemicals or particles in
the air that can harm the health of humans,
animals, and plants. It also damages buildings.
Air pollution is not seen, but its overpowering
smell alerts human.
Air pollution is a significant risk factor for a
number of pollution-related diseases, including
respiratory infections, heart disease, COPD,
stroke and lung cancer
DID YOU KNOW THAT…
• India has the highest death rate due to air pollution
• Air pollution was estimated killed 500,000 people in China each year, each because of
pneumonia-related deaths and air pollution from motor vehicle emissions

SOURCES
OF AIR POLLUTION
PART 2
SOURCES OF AIR POLLUTION
Traffic-Related Air Pollution
• from motor vehicle emissions, human-made air pollution: ground-level ozone,
various forms of carbon, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, volatile organic
compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and fine particulate matter.
Ozone
• pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers,
refineries, and other sources chemically react in the presence of
sunlight
Noxious gases
• include carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides (NOx),
and sulfur oxides (SOx), components of motor vehicle emissions
and by products of industrial processes
Particulate matter and Volatile organic compounds
• composed of chemicals such as sulfates, nitrates, carbon, or
mineral dusts, and VOCs given off by paints, cleaning supplies,
pesticides, some furnishings, and even craft materials like glue

PART 3
An umbrella term referring to
equipment and systems used to
regulate and eliminate the
emission of potentially
hazardous substances including
particulate matter and gases
produced by manufacturing,
process system, and research
applications into the air,
atmosphere, and surrounding
environment
AIR

processing facilities, which removes
particulates and gases from industrial
emissions, such as smokestack exhaust

mitigate nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions produced
by the burning of fossil fuels in industrial
applications.
These devices first inject ammonia into the

the NOx compounds to produce nitrogen and
oxygen
