Lesson 1 - Double Angle Formulae

This document provides formulas and identities for trigonometry including: 1. The addition formulas for sin(A+B) and cos(A+B) in terms of sinA, cosA, sinB, and cosB. 2. The double angle identities for sin(2A) and cos(2A) derived from the addition formulas by setting A=B. 3. Derivation of the formula for tan(A+B) in terms of tanA and tanB using the addition formulas for sin and cos.

Trigonometry
Knowledge of double angle formulae

Sin and Cos values you should know

The Addition Formulae
sin (A + B) = sin A cos B + cos A sin B
sin (A - B) = sin A cos B - cos A sin B

cos (A + B) = cos A cos B - sin A sin B

cos (A - B) = cos A cos B + sin A sin B
Double Angle Identities (1)
sin (2A)
sin (A + B) = sin A cos B + cos A sin B

Setting A = B
sin (A + A) = sin A cos A + cos A sin A
sin (2A) = 2 sin A cos A
Double Angles Identities (2)
cos (2A)
cos (A + B) = cos A cos B - sin A sin B
Setting A = B
cos (A + A) = cos A cos A - sin A sin A
cos (2A) = cos2 A - sin2 A
Since, sin2x + cos2x = 1
cos (2A) = cos2 A – (1 - cos2x) = 2 cos2 A - 1
cos (2A) = 1 - sin2x – sin2 A = 1 - 2 sin2 A
Challenge …...
Using
sin (A + B) = sin A cos B + cos A sin B
cos (A + B) = cos A cos B - sin A sin B
Find,
tan (A + B) = (in terms of tan A and tan B)
Tan (A + B) - 1
sin (A + B) = sin A cos B + cos A sin B
cos (A + B) = cos A cos B - sin A sin B
tan (A + B) = sin (A + B)
cos (A +B)
tan (A + B) = sin A cos B + cos A sin B
cos A cos B - sin A sin B
Divide by cos A cos B
tan (A + B) = sin A/cos A + sin B/cos B
1 - sin A sin B/cos A cos B
Tan (A + B) - 2
tan (A + B) = sin A/cos A + sin B/cos B
1 - sin A sin B/cos A cos B

tan (A + B) = tan A + tan B

1 – tan A tan B

Setting A = B
tan (A + A) = tan A + tan A
1 – tan A tan A
tan (2A) = 2 tan A
1 – tan2 A
Things you should know
sin x = cos (90-x)
y = sin x
cos x = sin (90-x)

sin 30 =1/2= 0.5

sin 0 = 0 sin 45 = 1/2 = 0.707
sin 90 =1
sin 60 = 3
/2 = 0.866
y = cos x
cos 60 =1/2= 0.5
cos 45 = 1/2 = 0.707
