ON
INTRODUCTION:
An Advanced Underground Subway is basically a facility that connects many busy places through a common route.
It contains a number of small shops which can be used for commercial purposes on the either side of the walkway.
It also has an underground vehicle parking facility which enables the users to use it with maximum ease.
The planning and Construction of such Advanced Underground facilities are very much essential in modern times
as we notice that majority of the Metropolitan Cities in India are on the verge of getting saturated due to
Urbanization.
The proposed Advanced Underground Subway is in tune with the principles of sustainability, it promotes safe
pedestrian movement and hence indirectly promotes walkability in a city; it represents social equity and makes
road crossing safe for children and senior citizens.
BACKGROUND:
concept of “Advanced Underground Subway” is inspired by UNDERGROUND CITIES which are already
being used in many of the developed countries.
As Wikipedia defines, an underground city is a series of linked subterranean spaces that may provide a
defensive refuge; a place for living, working or shopping; a transit system; mausolea; wine or storage cellars;
cisterns or drainage channels; or several of these.
The term may also refer to a network of tunnels that connects buildings beneath street level which may house
office blocks, shopping malls, metro stations, theatres, and other attractions.
Underground cities are especially functional in cities with very cold or hot climates, because they permit
activities to be comfortably accessible year round without regard to the weather.
NEED OF PROJECT:
The roads of pune are the fifth most congested in the world.
The pune pedestrian forum – Steps Towrds Empowering Pedestrians (STEP) has
remarked ‘free lefts are direct death sentence to pedestrians’.
The report stated that with 59% Congestion, Punekars spent spent 8 days and
hours (193hrs) Stuck in traffic while driving during peak hours 2019.
1. Minimising potential impacts on road traffic, pedestrian, cyclists, and existing
public transport and freight services.
2. In the achievement of environmentally-friendly, development , whether it be
in the reduction of pollution or noise nuisance.City traffic tunnels clear
vehicles from surface streets, traffic noise reduce, air becomes less polluted.
METHODOLOGY:
Practically, On the basis of thorough Investigations and studies, a junction on the National highway
NH 65,NH 60 between the Pune Satara road & Katraj Mumbai Bypass Stretch popularly known as KATRAJ CHOWK
was chosen. The stretch serves katraj is well connected with several key industrial areas and IT parks, spreads across
Hadapsar , Mundgwa ,Kharadi, and Kondhwa.Prominent industrial centres Tyani Audyogic Wasahat 4Km ,Hadapsar
Industrial Estate 11Km . In this area Schools, Colleges, Shopping centres are also incuded . Out of the thousands of
people using the stretch of the road every day, some unfortunate few become the victims of road fatalities in the process
of crossing the busy highway. Many studies and Analysis were carried out before planning the Advanced Underground
Subway such as:
1. Traffic Studies
2. Turning Volume and Delays
3. Topographic Surveys
4. Estimation and costing
5. Feasibility studies
AIM & OBJECTIVES
Travelling by subway helps to reduce traffic congestion above ground and
offers millions of commuters a rapid, efficient and relatively inexpensive form
of urban transport.
Enhancing breathable city air quality and reducing the climatic effects
attributable to greenhouse gases. Travelled by subway is therefore strongly to
be encouraged.
The emission of irritant gases such as ‘NITROGEN DIOXIDE’(NO2) , The world
health organisation WHO warned that breathing bad air shortens the lifespan
of cities.
To reduce accident cases increased day by day in metropolitan city .
LOCATION OF THE PROJECT- (Katraj junction)
TRAFFIC STUDY-
Following values for Passenger Car Equivalent1 were adopted for the analysis according to IRC 106-1990:
Agricultural Tractorand Trailers 4From the survey done at Katraj intersection, following observations were noted about
vehicle flow characteristics:
(a) For the traffic coming from Mumbai Bangalore Expressway Bypass, 75.9% traffic moves toward Kondhwa
Budruk and 24.1% traffic moves towards Katraj.
(b) For the traffic coming from Katraj, 19.3% traffic moves towards Mumbai Bangalore Expressway Bypass;
75.5% traffic moves towards Pune and remaining 5.2% traffic moves towards Kondhwa Budruk.
(c) For the traffic coming from Pune, 23.7% traffic moves towards Kondhwa Budruk; 45.6% traffic moves
towards Katraj; and remaining 30.7% traffic moves toward Mumbai Bangalore Expressway Bypass.
From the survey done at Nalstop intersection, following observations were noted about the vehicle flow characteristics:
(a) For the traffic coming from Kothrud, 58.5% traffic moves towards Deccan; and 41.5% traffic moves towards
Mhatre Bridge.
(b) For the traffic coming from Mhatre Bridge, 81.1% traffic moves towards Deccan; and 18.9% traffic moves
towards Kothrud.
(c) For the traffic coming from Deccan, 84.5% traffic moves towards Kothrud; and 15.5% traffic moves towards
Mhatre Bridge.
FLOW CHART OF PROJECT
Advanced Underground Subway facility in Katraj Pune enables ease of movement of Pedestrian
traffic as well as Vehicular traffic. The commercial space proposed inside the Subway facility
attractspeople to use it more, which eliminates the conflict of Pedestrians with Traffic. The
Project also ensures effective use of open spaces around for Parking which further improves
circulation
