D3O Materials: Presented by

D3O materials are viscoelastic polymers that contain intelligent molecules. Upon impact, the molecules lock together to absorb the energy of the impact by undergoing creep, where additional molecular cross-links form. When the stress is removed, the material returns to its original form. This allows D3O materials to absorb impact while maintaining their shape. D3O is used in protective equipment like shin guards, gloves, and phone cases because the intelligent molecules disperse force over a wide area upon impact, transmitting less force to the interior.

D3O Materials

With intelligent molecules

Why Intelligent ?
Due to impact absorption property
D30 material are mainly viscoelastic polymers contain intelligent
molecules that flow with you as you move, but lock together on
impact, absorbing the impact’s energy.

Non Newtonian Fluid – viscosity depends on the
force applied.

Visco-elastic materials- material shows both
elastic and viscous properties.

Purely elastic materials do not dissipate energy
when a load is applied, then removed.

Viscoelastic substance loses energy when a load
is applied, then removed. Eg. Eastomers(rubber)

It means they absorb Energy, while showing

elastic properties
So visco-elastic materials can absorb impact/shock
while maintaining its shape, But how...

Upon impact energy rich electrons induce a rearrangemen
and reaction of additional molecular cross-links within the
Structural material called creep.(means layers of long
chain moves over each other and make new bonds)

Creep occurs in order to accompany stress and as this
occurs it creates a back stress, when back stress is
becomes equal to applied impact no longer creep.

When the original stress is taken away, the accumulated
back stresses will cause the polymer to return to its original
form.

The material creeps, which gives the prefix visco, and the
material fully recovers, which gives the suffix elasticity.
Why Visco-elastic Polymers for D3O materials ?

Visco elastic polymers are better option than any

other material Some possibilities are :
• Why Polymer not metals-Visco elastic metals and
alloys exists but elasticity occurs only at very
high load/impacts. So, we cant use them for
general purposes.

• Why visco-elastic not elastic-elastic material

absorbs force when force is applied But energy
used only to stretch or bend covalent bond not for
making new bonds,So less energy absorption
than visco-elastic.

Impact absorption and transmission...
D3O materials are mainly used to make protective
wear.
• Upon impact, the molecules on the outer edge of the
d3o padding receive the most force and lock together,
absorbing and dispersing the force over a wide area.

• Now less force is left to be transmitted to the molecules

in the inside or core of the padding. These inner
molecules lock together less dramatically as they have
received less force from the impact. The force is again
absorbed and dispersed over a wide area.

• Finally the molecules on the inner side of the d3o padding

receive much less force from the impact and therefore
the material hardens much less. It still absorbs impact,
but the material remains relatively soft in comparison to
the outer molecules.
This is similar to how a helmet works.
Some Applications of D3O Materials

1. Football (soccer) shin guards and goalkeeping

gloves have been developed by Sells Goalkeeper
Products
2. Integrated into motorcycle gloves for protection of
the back of the hands and the knuckles
3. Early building blocks of molecular armor
4. d3o skins are available to protect the Apple iPhone
and iPod Touch in silver and black.
5. In the inner structure of the smart gloves
