Welcome

This document provides information about different types of couplings used to connect shafts. It lists four common types: flange couplings, muff or sleeve couplings, split muff couplings, and bush pin type flexible couplings. For each type, it describes the basic design and components, how it works to transmit power between shafts, and typical applications where it would be used based on load and alignment needs. The document aims to highlight the resisting sections and functioning of different coupling elements.

Coupling :
• A coupling is a device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for
the purpose of transmitting power. The primary purpose of couplings is to
join two pieces of rotating equipment while permitting some degree of
misalignment or end movement or both. In a more general context, a
coupling can also be a mechanical device that serves to connect the ends of
adjacent parts or objects. Couplings do not normally allow disconnection
of shafts during operation, however there are torque limiting couplings
which can slip or disconnect when some torque limit is exceeded.
Selection, installation and maintenance of couplings can lead to reduced
maintenance time and maintenance cost.
• Shaft couplings are used in machinery for several purposes. A primary
function is to transfer power from one end to another end (ex: motor
transfer power to pump through coupling).
Types of Couplings:

• Flange coupling
• Muff or Sleeve coupling
• Split Muff coupling
• Bush Pin type flexible coupling
Flange coupling
• Flange Coupling is a driving coupling between rotating shafts that consists
of flanges one of which is fixed at the end of each shaft, the two Flanges
being bolted together with a ring of bolts to complete the drive. A flange
coupling meant to bring two tube ends together in a flush, sealed manner.
This two-piece coupling unit consists of a key receiving side for the
flanged end to be fastened to, so it may be attached to the opposing tube
end, which also has a flanged end.
• Applications: It is used to join two pieces of rotating equipment while
permitting some degree of misalignment and for the Purpose of
transmitting power and torque.

Advantages and disadvantages
of Flange coupling:
• Advantages of rigid flange coupling :
• High torque transmitting capacity.
• Easy to assemble and dismantle.
• Simple in construction.
• Easy to design and manufacture.

• Disadvantages of rigid flange coupling :

• It can't tolerate misalignment between the axes of two shafts.
• It is used only where the motion is free from shock and vibrations.
• It requires more radial space.
Muff or Sleeve coupling
• A Sleeve coupling is a basic type of coupling. This consists of a pipe
whose bore is finished to the required tolerance based on the shaft size.
Based on the usage of the coupling a keyway is made in the bore in order
to transmit the torque by means of the key. Two threaded holes are
provided in order to lock the coupling in position

• Applications: They are used where the shafts don’t require any alignments
and load capacity is light to medium duty
Split Muff coupling
• In this coupling, the muff or sleeve is made into two halves parts of the
cast iron and they are joined together by means of mild steel studs or bolts.
The advantages of this coupling is that assembling or disassembling of the
coupling is possible without changing the position of the shaft. This
coupling is used for heavy power transmission at moderate speed.

• Applications: They are used for medium to heavy-duty load with

moderate speed.
Bush Pin type flexible coupling
• The function of a flexible coupling is to transmit torque from one shaft to
another shaft the bush type flexible coupling of the cushioned drive type,
transmits the torque through high tensile steel bolts to the machine input
shaft. Highly developed rubber compounds are used in bushes to absorb
shock loads, torsional vibrations and slight misalignments.

• Applications: Bush pin-type couplings are used where there is a little

amount of angular, parallel or axial misalignment. They are used in
medium-duty applications in electric motors & machines
