Final Script

The document is a lesson plan for teaching students about the five main food groups: fruits, vegetables, dairy, proteins, and grains. The teacher, Ms. Bahena, engages the students by asking them questions about their lunches and favorite foods. She then uses a video and interactive slides on the SMART board to teach the students about each food group. For each one, Ms. Bahena involves the students by having them help sort foods into the correct groups and identify foods that do not belong. The lesson reinforces what foods are included in each of the five major food groups.

The Five Food Groups

Ariadna Bahena
EDU 214
Ms. Bahena: Good afternoon class! How was your lunch break?
Students: Good, Ms. Bahena!
Ms. Bahena: Awesome! Can you tell me what you had for lunch? Please raise your hands.
*Wait for students to raise their hand
Ms Bahena: Alex, what did you have for lunch today?
Student 1: I had a ham and cheese sandwich, milk and an apple!
Ms. Bahena: Sounds good! Making healthy choices like having a fruit will help you grow
up big and strong. Today, we will be learning about the 5 food groups. To learn a bit
more about the 5 food groups we will watch a short video.
* I will put on this short video from Youtube to give the class an introduction to the five food group*
Ms. Bahena: Let’s repeat the names of the five food groups. They are fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein
and grains.
*Students will repeat the names out loud*
*After watching the video, I will present a lesson on the five food groups using the SMART board.
The lesson will be presented using the program SMART Notebook Interactive Viewer, which will
allow students to physically interact with the slides.*
Ms. Bahena: All right, we will get started with the
fruit group. What's your favorite fruit to snack on?
Student 2: I like oranges and strawberries!
Student 3: My favorite fruit is apples.

Ms. Bahena: Good, we have some of your favorite

fruits on the board! Let's feed the hungry hippo his
favorite fruits! Use your finger to drag the fruit into
his mouth. *I will demonstrate how to use the
SMART board by dragging a fruit into the hippo’s
mouth* Careful! Something in this group does
NOT belong.

* 3 students will be chosen to come up to the board

and select a fruit by poking and dragging the fruit
into the hippo’s mouth.

Ms. Bahena: Good job, students! Apples, oranges,

pears and bananas are part of the fruit group.
Ms. Bahena: Fruits give us many vitamins and minerals that we need to stay healthy. Fruit also
has natural sugars. So next time you have a sweet tooth, reach for a banana or apple for a
healthier snack!
Ms. Bahena: We are now moving on to the vegetable group.
Put some vegetables in the salad bowl! Keep an eye open,
one of these foods is NOT a part of the vegetable group. I
will point and you call out "yes or no" together.

*Point to lettuce, and wait for students response*

Students 4: Yes!

*Drag the lettuce to the salad bowl using the SMART board.
Repeat with broccoli, carrots and tomato*

Ms. Bahena: Good job everybody! We have put lettuce,

tomato, carrots and broccoli in our salad. Does the banana
belong in the vegetable group? Hands up if you know what
group the banana belongs to.

Student 5: No! Bananas are fruits.

Ms. Bahena: Very good, bananas go in the fruit group.

Ms. Bahena: What veggie is your favorite? Hands up to share with the class.
Student 6: I like peas!
Student 7: I don't like any vegetables.
Ms. Bahena: Really, that's too bad vegetables are very good for us. Like fruits, vegetables give
our bodies many of the minerals and vitamins needed to stay healthy. For example, carrots have
a lot of vitamin A, which is good for our eyes.
Ms. Bahena: Our next food group is dairy. Many foods from
this group can be found together at the grocery store. You
might remember seeing milk and yogurt near each other on the
shelf. *I will drag the milk and yogurt into the grocery cart
using the SMART board.* Help me place the dairy foods in the
grocery cart. Watch out! Some of these foods do NOT belong!

*2 students will come up to the SMART board and choose 2

more dairy items, they will poke the item with their finger and
drag it into the grocery cart.*

Ms. Bahena: Tell me what foods you choose for the dairy
group.

Student 8: I put cheese in the dairy group.

Student 9: I like ice cream and think it is dairy. Apples go in

the fruit group.

Ms. Bahena: Yes! milk, yogurt, cheese and ice cream are part
of the dairy group. Apples and fish do not belong. Apples are a
fruit and fish belongs to the protein group.
Ms. Bahena: What animal helps us make these foods?
Student 10: Cows give us milk!
Ms. Bahena: Yes, Leyla you are correct! Milk comes from cows. We also use that milk to
make cheese, yogurt and ice cream. Did you know that some stores also sell goat milk and
cheese! Dairy is full of the nutrient calcium, which helps us build strong bones.
We are now moving on to protein! What food
can we put in the protein group? Hands up if you
know the answer.
Student 11: Fish is a protein!
Ms. Bahena: Yes, good job you remembered!
Meat is a big part of the protein group. What
meat do we see on the board.
Student 12: Chicken!
Ms. Bahena: Good job, chicken is a protein.
What other food do we see on the board?
Student 13: I see a burger!
Ms. Bahena: Yes, there is a burger on the board!
The protein would be the beef patty inside the
burger. Beef comes from cows.
Student 14: Wow, we get a lot foods from cows!
Ms. Bahena: Some people are vegetarian or vegan, this
means they do not eat meat. Luckily, there are other foods
besides meat that can give people the protein they need.
Nuts like peanuts, and legumes like beans can give us
protein. Eggs are also a great source of protein!
*I will drag the picture of the egg onto the menu*
Ms. Bahena: Help the chef pick foods rich in protein that
are NOT meat for the menu. I will call out the food and you
will all shout out yes or no.
Ms. Bahena: Chicken!
Students: No! Chicken is meat.
Ms. Bahena: Does peanut butter belong in the protein
group?
Students: *Half says yes, half says no.*
Ms. Bahena: I hear yes and no, let’s talk about it. What is
peanut butter made of? Raise your hands.
Student 15: Peanuts!
Ms. Bahena: You got it! Peanuts give us proteins, which
means peanut butter goes on the menu.
Ms. Bahena: Now, what about the green beans?

Class: Yes, beans are protein!

Ms. Bahena: That’s right! Green beans are a legume. Protein helps us build strong muscles!
Ms. Bahena: The grain group contains foods made from wheat,
rice, oats, corn, and barley. Foods in the grain group include
rice and bread.
*I will drag the rice bowl and loaf of bread onto the shopping
basket.*
Ms. Bahena: I need three students to help me put more grain
foods in the shopping basket.
*Three students will come up to the SMART board to select
grains*
Ms. Bahena: I see cereal and a muffin in our basket, they are a
part of the grain group. Hmm, I see one more item that could
go in or basket. What could it be?
Student 16: It’s not a pear because that’s fruit.
Student 17: Cheese is dairy!
Ms. Bahena: Great job everybody! All we have left is the
spaghetti. Pasta like spaghetti and macaroni are a part of the
grains group. We got all the grains in our shopping basket.
Ms. Bahena: The grain group provides our body with energy as well as many nutrients.
The nutrients found in these whole grains not only give nourishment to our bodies but they
also help us have energy to do the things we love to do!
