Aggregate Testing For Concrete

This document provides specifications and testing procedures for aggregate used in concrete. It lists standards and specifies testing frequency for various aggregate properties such as grading, silt content, flakiness index, and impact value. Detailed test procedures are given for sieve analysis of sand and coarse aggregate, silt content, flakiness and elongation index, impact value, and moisture content. Samples sizes, equipment, and calculations are described for each test.

LIST OF TESTS ON AGGREGATE

• SIEVE ANALYSIS (SAND & COARSE AGGREGATE)

• SILT CONTENT
• FLAKINESS & ELONGATION INDEX
• AGGREGATE IMPACT VALUE
• MOISTURE CONTENT
SIEVE ANALYSIS OF SAND & COARSE AGGREGATE

• Grading shall be as per IS 2386 Part 1. Sample size shall be 1kg or 500 gms as per sieve dia.
• Sample shall be brought to air dry condition at room temperature.
• Each sieve shall be shaken separately over a clean tray – for a period of no less than 2 minutes.
• Shaking shall be with a varied motion, back and forth, left to right, clockwise and anti-clockwise
and frequent jarring.
• Material shall not be forced through sieve by hand pressure.
• On completion of sieving, material retained on each sieve shall be weighed.
SIEVE ANALYSIS OF SAND
SIEVE ANALYSIS OF COARSE AGGREGATE
SILT CONTENT

• The sand shall not contain more than 8% of silt as determined by field test with measuring cylinder.
• A sample of sand to be tested shall be placed without drying in a 200 ml measuring cylinder.
• The volume of the sample shall be such that it fills the cylinder upto 100 ml mark.
• Clean water shall be added upto 150 ml mark.
• Dissolve a little salt in the water in the proportion one tea spoon to half a litre.
• The mixture shall be shaken vigorously, the last few shakes being sidewise direction to level off the sand and
the contents allowed to settle for three hours.
• The height of the silt visible as settled layer above the sand shall be expressed as a percentage of the height of
sand below.
FLAKINESS INDEX & ELONGATION INDEX

• Flakiness & Elongation index shall be as per IS 2386 Part 1. A minimum of 200 pieces
of any fraction shall be tested.
• The sample shall be sieved as per the Table V of IS 2386.
• Each fraction shall be gauged to the relevant thickness as per table.
• Weigh the total amount passing the gauge thickness.
• Flakiness index is the total wt. of material passing the various thickness gauges expressed
as % of total wt. of the sample gauged.
FLAKINESS INDEX & ELONGATION INDEX

• Each fraction shall be gauged to the relevant length as per table.

• Weigh the total amount retained on the gauge length.
• Elongation index is the total wt. of material retained the various length gauges expressed
as % of total wt. of the sample gauged.
FLAKINESS INDEX & ELONGATION INDEX
AGGREGATE IMPACT VALUE

• Aggregate Impact Value shall be as per IS 2386 Part 4.

• Cylindrical steel cup shall be 102 mm dia and 50mm depth. Metal tup /hammer shall be
13-14 Kg.
• Sample shall be CA of 12.5 mm passing and retained on 10 mm. Sample shall be dried
in oven for 4 hours at temperature of 100 to 1100C.
• Measure shall be filled with aggregate 3 layers with 25 stokes each layer.
• The net weight of the aggregate in the measure shall be recorded as “A”
AGGREGATE IMPACT VALUE (AIV)

• The cup shall be fixed firmly in the position. The whole sample shall be compacted by single tamping of 25
stokes.
• The hammer shall raised 380 mm and allowed to freely fall on the sample.
• The sample is subjected to 15 blows and each at interval not less than 1 sec.
• The sample shall then be removed and sieved through 2.36 mm. The weight of sample passing shall be
recorded as “B” and weight retained as “C”.
• If the total weight of (B+C) is less than “A” by one (1) gram, the test is discarded.
• The Aggregate Impact Value = (B/A) X100
• The mean of two results shall be reported as AIV of material.
MOISTURE TEST OF AGGREGATE

• Moisture content of sand and coarse aggregate shall be carried out on daily basis.
• Weight the sample of each aggregate size separately (20mm, 10mm and sand)
• Weigh the sample and container as W1

• Over dry the sample along with Container and weigh as W2

• Weigh the empty container as W3

• Total moisture is calculated as {(W1-W2) / (W3-W2) } x 100 %
• Free moisture = Total moisture – Water absorption
