Greatest Common Factor

This document discusses finding the greatest common factor (GCF) of multiple numbers using the continuous division method. It provides examples of finding the GCF of pairs of numbers and explains how to use the method to find the GCF of three or more numbers. It also gives applications of finding the GCF to solve word problems involving cutting items into equal lengths or packaging supplies in equal quantities.

GREATEST COMMON FACTOR

Factors are also divisors, so it follows that the greatest

common factor is also the greatest common divisor of the
given numbers. Some numbers, like 25 and 18, have no
common factors other than 1. the numbers are said to be
relatively prime.

One way of solving for the GCF of a set of given numbers is

through CONTINUOUS DIVISION METHOD. As its name
implies, it is done with repeated division until all given
numbers are not anymore divisible by one common divisor
other that 1. The following steps are considered in this
method.
Step 1: Write the given numbers horizontally and
determine a common prime factor that will divide all the
numbers.

Step 2: Write each common prime factor at the left side

of the horizontal line and write the quotients below the
numbers. Repeat the process until there is no common
prime divisor.

Step 3: Multiply all the prime divisors, which is the GCF.

Example 1 What is the GCF of 18 and 27?
Solution:
Step 1 18 27

3 18 27
6 9

Step 2 3 18 27

4 6 9

2 3

Step 3 3x3=9

Answer: The GCF of 18 and 27 is 9.

Example 2 Find the GCF of 28, 56, and 42.
Step 1 28 56 42

7 28 56 42
Step 2 4 8 6

2 4 8 6
Step 3 2 4 3

Step 4 7 x 2 = 14

Answer: The GCF of 28, 56 and 42 is 14.

Applications and Problem Solving
Example 3
Mr. Perez bought paper plates, table napkins and cups as his contribution for
every Christmas party he will go to. Plates come in packages of 60, table napkins
in 80 and cups in 120.he wants to bring the same number of plates, table napkins
and cups. What is the largest possible number of each that he can bring?
Understand.
a. What is asked?
o The largest number of plates, table napkins, and cups he could bring to
every Christmas party he will ever go.
b. What are the given facts?
o plates comes in packages of 60
o table napkins on 80
o cups in 120
Plan. What strategy can we use to solve the problem?
We can solve for the GCF of three quantities. We can do this through
Continuous Division Method.
Solve.
5 60 80 120
6 12 16 24

7 6 8 12
3 4 6
5 x 2 x 2 = 20

Answer:
Therefore, Mr. Perez can bring 20 pieces of plates, 20 pieces of table napkins, and
20 pieces of cups to each Christmas party that he will attend to.
Check. To check our answer, we need to make sure that 20 is indeed the greatest
or largest factor common to all given numbers, 60, 80 and 120. we can do it
through listing all the factors of each given.
60 – 1, 2 , 3 , 4 , 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20 , 30, 60
80 – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, 20 , 40, 80
120 – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20 , 24, 30, 40, 60, 120
Observe that beyond 20, there is no other factor common to all given.
Therefore, we confirm that 20 is the greatest common factor.
Evaluate:
A. Find the factors and identify the GCF.

2. 28 and 36 1. 25, 30, 42
28: 2. 24, 36, 48
36: B. Solve each problem.
GCF: 3. A carpenter has two water pipes
Show your solution by using continuous which are 60 dm and 72 dm long,
division method to find the GCF of the respectively. He cuts them into
following sets of numbers. equal lengths. What is the greatest
possible length of each pipe?
4. Miss Reyes asked the girls to help
her pack art supplies for a drawing
contest. There are 24 markers, 40
sheets of manila paper and 16 boxes
of crayons. All packages must have
atleast one kind of each supply.
What is the greatest number of
