*Pull out a YouTube video and show them the same video
but change it resolution from 140p to 1080p*
Mr. Tan: As you can see here, resolution play a really
important role in a good video not only that, let watch
another video about fps (frame per second)
*show a video explain what is fps and the different between
30 and 60 fps and why it important*
*after those videos*
Mr. Tan: So we all know why the resolution and the fps play
a important role in a video, it make the video look clear,
beautiful video will not hurt the eyes of viewer.
Mr. Tan: Any question in either resolution or fps?
*student raise hand*
Student: What is the highest resolution for now?
Mr. Tan: Good question, the highest resolution is 4k, but to
get to that point need a lot of effort and a good computer, if
not, your computer will die if you try to do it.
*Turn off the video, open
OBS application*
Mr. Tan: So, we go through
what is good resolution
and fps, how can we get
our video to reach that
level? So today, OBS will be
our helper.
*Show for student OBS
display*
Mr. Tan: First of all, when
you look at this, you will
think it complicate, but it
not. Let’s walk through
how to get OBS to record
our video like we want.
*show for student the Scenes box*
Mr. Tan: If in this scenes box have no Scene, we need to
add one, this mean that in the scene, we can set what it
going to record.
Student: How can we add one?
Mr. Tan: Good question, so the way to add one is to right
click it, and another the box will pop up, click in add, and
it will pop up a box, that is what name you will give to
the second scene, or any scene that you create. It can be
any name, you can put the name that help you
remember what in this scene.
Mr. Tan: Like the name “Source” this
box will be the key to let OBS know
what to record.
Mr. Tan: And just like what we do with
the Scene, we right click this too so we
can add the source. And after we add
source, we can choose what to record,
like a window, a video game, or the
entire desktop.

Mr. Tan: Of course we not playing game in class, so

we can left out the game capture, I don’t want to
be in trouble let my student playing game in class
*student chuckle*
Mr. Tan: We can also left out other setting, right
now, we don’t need to know all about it, there are
two thing we need to focus on, “Window capture”
(capture specific window) or “Display capture”
(Desktop capture).
Mr. Tan: As you can see here, when I click on display capture, we can
also name it like we do with the Scene. And after we add it, as we can
see there, our desktop is on it, we can see OBS and it display, the white
bar on top of it. So if you hit record, it will record the entire screen.
Really amazing! Right?
*student nod*
Mr. Tan: As you guy can see here, when I click in window capture,
there will be a name box where you can set the name, but it just
the same so let skip it, you can name it if you want to. After that,
there will be a box where you can set what to record, here I show
that I choose to record Power point, so even if I in OBS, I still can
see Power point in my back ground. If you hit record, it will only
record Power Point no matter what window you at. Click Ok to
apply the change. Always!
Mr. Tan: Next up, let walk through the setting, we not going through every setting of it, that
will be too much, we will focus on four thing Output, Audio, Video, and Hotkeys.
Any question so far before we move on to those setting?
*Student raise hand*: What is the Virtual Camera?
Mr. Tan: It is when you want to have your webcam, but you don’t want people to see your
face, so you can replace it with a 3D animation face, it will move, act like your face
reaction, but no one will know who you are.
Ok, any more question?
*No student raise hand*
Mr. Tan: Don’t hesitate to ask!, so, we will move on to those setting that I have said before.
Mr. Tan: In the tab Output, you just need focus on this one, but left out the last thing
“custom mixer setting* since I don’t even know what it is. Start by recording path,
this will let you choose where your video will go. It can be any folder, or any disk that
you like, but for organize, I usually put them in video tab, so I can view them when
ever I want to. Any question on this?
*student don’t have question*
Mr. Tan: Ok good, let move on.
Mr. Tan: Let explain the recording quality in
simple word, the more quality you want, the
larger that video file will be. If you have any
question, please ask!
*student raise hand*
Student: so what is the different between the
quality and the resolution?
Mr. Tan: Very good, the different is not much,
is all about how good the video will be, but
resolution is actually how to set the ratio of
the video. For example if you set the
resolution is 1920* 1080, then when you
upload to YouTube, it will be 1080p, the
highest resolution. Any question?
*no hand from any student*
Mr. Tan: The next thing we cover is the recording format,
for easy upload, we should just put it as MP4 since every
web page support MP4, other format, just don’t worry
about it, because not every web page supporting it, so
just don’t care. Any question?
*no hand raise*
Mr. Tan: for this setting, it will depend on your
computer, if your computer is not a strong machine,
then choose the bottom one, if it a strong machine,
then choose the top one. Any question on this part?
*Student raise hand*
Student: How can we know if our computer is weak
or strong?
Mr. Tan: Oh, you know it by try it, if you try to record
and it laging, then your computer is not strong. If
not, then you ok to leave it like it is.
Mr. Tan: For the Audio type, we only pay
attention to Desktop audio and the
Mic/Auxilary Audio. Please the Desktop audio
in default as it keep the defautl desktop sound,
the sound that for example you pay a YouTube
video, and it have sound, OBS will record that
sound.
For mic audio, set to Microphone, or what ever
you plug it in, if you don’t have your mic plug
in, you won’t see this line, so you can’t be
wrong about it.
Mr. Tan: For this one, all you have to know, is the
resolution and the FPS. The FPS you can leave it
as 60, but better at 59.94, it still count as 60 FPS, I
have tried it, and 60 work better for my
computer, so it depend, if your computer ork best
for 60fps, then use 60fps, my work best at 59.94,
so I leave it as it is, if your computer is not strong,
leave it as 30 fps. And the resolution, like I saidit
before, leave it as 1080, full HD. Any question?
*student raise hand*
Student: So what is the Downscale Filter?
Mr. Tan: The option called Downscale Filter will
decide how you choose to downscale your
resolution if you choose to do this. But we don’t
do that, so just leave it a side.
Mr. Tan: Last but not lease, we have the hot key! Oh, super hot here. But, not like the name, the
hot key is not hot, ok? *student chuckle* The Hot key will help you so not every time you have to
open OBS, and click at start recording, instead, you can click the hot key that you set it before.
For me, I set it F12 for start recording, since it not duplicate in any button, but if you want to set
it in different then set any key that will not interupt you when you press it.
Mr. Tan: So, we going through every setting that are nessesery for a good video, next up, I will
have a activity for you guy
*open a Kahoot game on my laptop*
Mr. Tan: Since Kahoot welcome screen have a lot animation, is good to test out our app, OBS. I
will reset every setting of OBS, then I will let you guy setting it, record welcome screen of Kahoot
for 10 second. Then we will watch that again, if the video is clear, you good, if it not, we will
check the setting again, to see if we can spot out the wrong setting.
