Space Exploration

Social Science and Natural Science

INTRODUCT I chose to view the topic of Space
ION Exploration through the Natural Science and
Social Science lenses.

Space exploration has always been a

topic I am deeply interested in. All my
life I have been drawn to science-fiction
movies about space travel. Through
these two lenses, I hope to gain a deeper
insight into the possibility of deep-space
travel.
SPACE
EXPLORATI • There are millions of pieces of man-made debris orbiting the

ON AND earth.
• The US has been meeting with other countries since 1987 to
discuss way to minimize orbital debris issues.
SOCIAL • In 1995, NASA issued the first guidelines for limiting orbital
debris.

SCIENCE • Limiting debris around the earth is essential to ensuring

satellites we rely on are not damaged or destroyed.
• “Although NASA and the Department of Defense (DoD) had
been examining the peculiar behavior of US Delta launch
vehicles flown in the 1970s and 1980s to fragment
spontaneously into hundreds of detectable debris after
successful missions, the explosion of a dormant European Ariane
upper stage in November 1986, into nearly 500 identified pieces
served as a wake-up call to the world aerospace community.”
• Space exploration is viewed through the Social Science lens by
using observations and statistics.
Building energy is 35%-40% of total energy consumption in
industrialized nations.

SPACE For over 50 years NASA has been supplying space technology to the
EXPLORATION private sector for the betterment of humankind.

AND NATURAL Singapore has created a system called Green Mark for evaluating
SCIENCE how environmentally sustainable a building is.

Apart from its mainstream outer space exploration, many of

NASA's inventions have also been adopted in commercial, domestic
and medical applications over the years.

Natural Science views Space Exploration by using the scientific

method to follow steps for repeatable and consistent results.
CONVERGENCE

Both lenses look at observations and data to solve a problem.

Both lenses look to literature from the past.

In both articles they mention NASA using products its developed for space
exploration to enhance private-sector products.
• Natural science in general, pays attention to the
natural world, in social sciences, the focus is on the
human being in the social and cultural context.
• “Natural science research takes place in a controlled
environment; in Social Science it is difficult to perform
research in a controlled environment” (“Difference
Between Natural Science and Social Sciences”).
• Social Science differs from Natural Science regarding
DIVERGENCE how they view data. Social Science looks at space
exploration in terms of costs, while Natural Science
perceives that same issue and presents potential
solutions.
BOTH LENSES

When looking through the articles with both lenes, we can see how both can
be applied to the articles read:
“Cleaning up space: The development of international space debris policies”: Social Science
lens tells us that governments are developing different tracking systems to make space
exploration safer and how to avoid space debris from damaging satellites we need and use
daily. The Natural Lens can be used to look at ways to make rockets and space craft more
reusable. This will be useful in mitigating the space debris left behind.
“Exploring outer space technologies for sustainable buildings”: With the Natural Science
lens, this article discussed how sustainable building materials were being developed for
bases created on the moon or other planets. Viewed through Social Science lens we can see
how these developed materials could be used to improve housing we have here on Earth.
FURTHER EXPLORATION • For further exploration I would like to
know more about deep-space travel.
• What are some ways astronauts can cope
with long periods of travel?
• Deep-space travel, isolation effects, low-
gravity exposure
• How would governments fund the bases
built on other planets?
• Moon base funding, who pays for space,
private-sector moon operations
CONCLUSION
Through looking at Space Exploration from the
Natural Science lens that technologies developed
for space exploration, are being used to drive
technologies we use on earth. The Social Science
lens has taught me that if something is not done
about space debris, all the comforts, we use here
on Earth will be affected. A benefit of viewing this
topic through both lenses is that you can view the
data of an issue on a personal level as well as a
scientific level.
