Introduction to Health
In general terms, health is the state of being free from illness or injury. WHO defined
health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well -being and not just
merely the absence of disease or infirmity".
It is a state that allows the individual to
adequately cope with all demands of daily life (implying also the absence of disease
and impairment).
Health can also be defined holistically. Holistic Health is actually an approach to life.
Rather than focusing on illness or specific parts of the body, this ancient approach to
health considers the whole person and how he or she interacts with his or her
environment. It emphasizes the connection of mind, body and spirit.
What does it mean to be healthy?
Being healthy is something worth striving for, but what does it actually mean?
Being healthy looks different for different people. When we are healthy, we will feel well:
physically, mentally and socially. Being healthy means feeling our best, it’s not about how
we look.
Following a strict diet or exercise regimen won’t make us healthy — to be healthy we must
care for our body and mind, as a whole.
The steps that we take to care for our health will change throughout the different stages of
our life — but there are some fundamental areas of our health that we can prioritize to
ensure that we feel our best.
Health Education
It is the educational programme that provides broad knowledge about various aspect of health
to learner. It is an applied science rather than pure science. It is a continuous process that
provides knowledge to attain positive change in health related matters.
Some importance of heath education are :
• Production of capable and efficient manpower.
• Eradication of superstitious belief.
• Reduction of mortality rate.
• Attainment of positive health.
The new national health policy 1991, has given ultimate mandate to HEIC authority, to plan,
manage and implement health education

Types of Exercise
Physical exercises are generally grouped into three types, depending on the overall effect they
have on the human body:
1.Aerobic exercise is any physical activity that uses large muscle groups and causes the body
to use more oxygen than it would while resting. The goal of aerobic exercise is to
increase cardiovascular endurance. Examples of aerobic exercise
include running, cycling, swimming, brisk walking, skipping rope, rowing, hiking, dancing,
playing tennis, continuous training, and long distance running.
2.Anaerobic exercise, which includes strength and resistance training, can firm, strengthen, and
increase muscle mass, as well as improve bone density, balance, and coordination. Examples of
strength exercises are push-ups, pull-ups, lunges, squats, bench press. Anaerobic exercise also
includes weight training, functional training, eccentric training, interval training, sprinting,
and high-intensity interval training which increase short-term muscle strength.
3.Flexibility exercises stretch and lengthen muscles. Activities such as stretching help to
improve joint flexibility and keep muscles limber. The goal is to improve the range of motion
which can reduce the chance of injury.[
Physical exercise can also include training that focuses on accuracy, agility, power, and speed.

Tips on Starting
Exercise may be difficult to maintain for some people. Consider the following tips to
achieve long-term success:
1.Have a clear goal: Whether for health reasons or otherwise, try to always keep in
mind the reason you started increasing your exercise levels.
2.Work at your own pace: Doing too much too quickly can increase the risk of injury
and the chance to develop a stable routine. Set targets based on the goals you
established at the start of the regimen and celebrate small wins to boost confidence.
3.Enjoy yourself: A regimen is more sustainable if a person enjoys the physical
activities that it involves.
4.Vary your exercises: Change your exercise program every few weeks. Mixing it up
can help a person work on different muscle groups and increase the range of benefits. If
you enjoy one particular exercise, such as running, try changing the speed and distance
of a run, or follow a different route with more hills.
5.Make it a habit: After a few weeks of regularity, an exercise routine starts to become
a habit, even if you find it difficult or boring at first.
