Lesson 2 - Divisibility Rules For 3, 6 and 9

1) To determine if a number is divisible by 3, add the digits of the number. If the sum is divisible by 3, then the original number is divisible by 3. 2) To determine if a number is divisible by 6, check if it is divisible by both 2 and 3. A number is divisible by 6 if the ones digit is even and the sum of the digits is divisible by 3. 3) To determine if a number is divisible by 9, add the digits of the number. If the sum is divisible by 9, then the original number is divisible by 9.

USING DIVISIBILITY RULES

FOR 3, 6 AND 9 TO FIND THE

COMMON FACTORS.
Lesson 2
Is 126 divisible by 3?
A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of all the digits is
divisible by 3.
Look at the example. 1 1+ 2 + 6 = 9 (add all
the digits)
9 ÷ 3 = 3 (divide the sum by 3)

126 is divisible by 3 because the sum of all the digits which 9 is divisible
by 3. So, 126 divided 3, the answer is exactly 42.
DIVISIBILITY RULE FOR 3
• A number is divisible by 3 if…

• The sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 3.

• Examples
• 354
• 3 + 5 + 4 = 12
• 12 / 3 = 4

• 9,363,129
• 9 + 3 + 6 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 9 = 33
• 33/3 = 11
Is 642 divisible by 6?
If a number is divisible by both 2 and 3, then it is divisible by 6.
• Look at the example.
642 is divisible by 2 since the ones digit, 2, is even.
(add all the digits) 6 + 4 + 2 = 12
(divide the sum by 3) 12 ÷ 3 = 4

Since 642 is divisible by both 2 and 3, then 642 is also divisible by 6.

DIVISIBILITY RULE FOR 6
• A number is divisible by 6 if…

• The number is divisible by both 3 and 2.

• Examples
• 930
• 6000
• 216
Is 684 divisible by 6?
• A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of all the digits is
divisible or a multiple of 9.
• Let’s find out:
(add all the digits) 6 + 8 + 4 = 18
(divide the sum by 3) 18÷ 9 = 2

Therefore 684 is divisible by 9.

DIVISIBILITY RULE FOR 6
• A number is divisible by 6 if…

• The number is divisible by both 3 and 2.

• Examples
• 930
• 6000
• 216
DIVISIBILITY RULE FOR 9
• A number is divisible by 9 if…

• The sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 9.

• Examples
• 495
• 4 + 9 + 5 = 18
• 18 / 9 = 2

• 999,918
• 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 1 + 8 = 45
• 45 / 9 = 5
