CONNECTION
The elements that make up the steel structure must
be combined with each other with a connection
system. The connection serves to unite the
elements and channel the load from one part to
another.
TYPE OF CONNECTION

Bolt Connection Welding connection Rivet’s

4
BOLT CONNECTION
Each steel structure is a combination of several rod components
incorporated with fasteners.
One of the fasteners is bolts especially high quality bolts (A325
and A490).
In addition to high quality there are also normal quality bolts
A307 made of low carbon grade steel.
Two basic types of high quality bolts rated by ASTM are AS35
and A490 types.

5
BOLT CONNECTION
High quality bolt diameters range from 1/2 -11/2 in, which are often used in building
structures 3/4 and 7/8 in diameter, in bridge designs 7/8 to 1 in in diameter.
In the installation of high quality bolts require sufficient initial tensile force obtained
from the initial fastening.
This force will provide friction so that it is strong enough to shoulder the working load.
This force is called proof load obtained which multiplies the area of tensile voltage (As)
with a strong melting of 70% fu for A325 and 80% fu for A490.

6
BOLT CONNECTION
With:
db is the nominal diameter of the bolt n is the number of threads per mm

7
BOLT CONNECTION
a bolt that carries the factored load, Ru in accordance with the requirements of LRFD
must meet:

with:
Rn = nominal resistance of bolts, the magnitude of the Rn varies for each type of
connection.
φ = reduction factor taken by 0.75

8
BOLT CONNECTION
There are 3 types in the nominal resistance of bolts, namely

Prisoner sliding bolts

nominal resistance of one bolt that carries a sliding force meets the equation:

With:
r1 = 0.50 for bolts without threads on the slide plane
r1 = 0.40 for bolts with threads on the slide plane
fub = strong pull bolt (MPa)
Ab = gross area of bolt cross section on threadless area
m = number of sliders

9
BOLT CONNECTION
There are 3 types in the nominal resistance of bolts, namely :

Prisoner pull bolt

bolts bearing the pull force of the prisoner are nominally calculated according to:

With:
fub = strong pull bolt (MPa)
Ab = gross area of bolt cross section on threadless area

10
BOLT CONNECTION
There are 3 types in the nominal resistance of bolts, namely :

Prisoner pedestal bolt

nominal pedestal resistance depends on the weakest condition of the bolt or plate components connected. The magnitude
is determined as follows:

With:
db = diameter of bolts in non-threaded areas
tp = plate thickness
fu = lowest tensile strength (breaking voltage) of a bolt or plate

11
Welding connection
Welding is the process of joining two or more pieces of material by which is
obtained by fusion (heated) of the edges, with or without application of
pressure and a filler material.
And this joining connections are called welded connection.

Beam-column
connection
24
A structural component that must be able to carry axial loads
(pull/press) as well as bending moments. If the magnitude of the axial
force that works is small enough compared to the flexible moment that
works, then the effect of the axial force can be ignored and the
components of the structure can be designed as flexible beam components.
However, if the components of the structure carry axial forces and bending
moments that cannot be ignored by one of them, then the components of
the structure are called beam - columns.
