2 Point Sources

The document summarizes the far field patterns produced by arrays of two isotropic point sources with different current configurations: 1) Equal amplitude and phase results in a maximum field when the path difference is an integer multiple of the wavelength. The pattern is the same as a single source. 2) Equal amplitude but opposite phase produces a sinusoidal pattern with maxima along the bisector and minima along the line connecting the sources. 3) Unequal amplitudes with any phase difference results in a more complex pattern with maxima and minima dependent on the magnitude and phase difference of the two sources.

Array of Two Points Sources

Array of two isotropic point sources are considered. The two isotropic point sources are fed with current of

 Equal amplitude and phase

 Equal amplitude and different phase

 Unequal amplitude and any opposite phase

CASE (I) Array of Two Points Sources With Equal Amplitude And Phase

• The wave from source ‘1’ reaches the point ‘P’ at a later time than the wave from source ’2’

• The path difference between the two waves is (1’2’)

Path difference = d/ 2 cos + d/2 cos = dcos metres

Path difference in wavelengths wavelengths

  Phase difference

Let, = Far electric field at distance P, due to source 1

= Far electric field at distance P, due to source 2

E = Total Electric field

= Phase angle difference between the fields of the two

sources measured at an angle
The total far at distant point P is,

Where.  field component due to source 1

 field component due to source 2

Equal Amplitude and phase

If and

Maximum value

To draw the field pattern the direction of maxima and minima and half power point should be known

Maximum Direction:

E is maximum when is maximum, and its maximum value is

  Minima Direction:

E is minimum when is minimum, and its minimum value is 0

Half Power Point Directions:

Half power points is or voltage or current is times the maximum value of voltage or current
Field Pattern:
CASE (II) Two Points Sources With Currents Equal In Magnitude But Opposite In Phase

 This is exactly same as the first case, except that point source 1 is out of phase or opposite phase(180 degree) to source 2

 When there is maximum at source 1, there will be minimum at source 2 and vice versa

The total far field at a distant point P is,

j = opposite phase, phase shift of 90 degree

Maximum Direction

Maximum value of sin function is

Minima Direction:

Minimum value of sine function is 0

Half Power Point Directions:

CASE (III) Two Points Sources With Currents Unequal In Magnitude And With Any Phase
