What is a Conjunction?
Conjunction
You can use a conjunction to link words,
phrases, and clauses, as in the following
example:

 I ate the pizza and the pasta.


 Call the movers when you are ready.
Types of Conjunctions
There are four types of conjunctions

 Co-ordinating Conjunctions
 Subordinating Conjunctions
 Correlative Conjunctions
 Conjunctive adverb
Clause
Clause
A clause is a group of related words which
conveys meaning.  A clause has both a
subject and a predicate.

 Ali sits by that window


 Ahmed walks alone

 
Kinds of Clauses
There are four types of clauses. These are two
types which are pertinent to our topic.

 Dependent Clause
 Independent Clause (Main Clause)
Independent Clause 

An independent clause can stand alone as a


sentence.It is also know as Main Clause  Here
is an example

We walk to school. 
This sentence expresses a complete thought
and can stand alone.
Dependent Clause 

A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a


sentence.  Here is an example

when the cake is done baking 


This clause does not express a complete
thought and cannot stand alone.

 I enjoy the opera
  unless it comes today
 although I lost the library book
  they're going on a picnic
 mom found it in the drawer
 the fifth graders sang
 when the movie is over

Conjunctions
Co-ordinating Conjunctions

You use a co-ordinating conjunction ("and,"


"but," "or," "nor," "for," "so," or "yet") to join
individual words, phrases, and independent
clauses.
Examples of Co-ordinating
Conjunctions
 Lilacs and violets are usually purple.
 He is playing cricket but Aslam is watching tv.

Subordinating Conjunctions

A subordinating conjunction introduces a


dependent clause and indicates the nature of
the relationship among the independent
clause(s) and the dependent clause(s).
Examples of Subordinating Conjunctions

The most common subordinating conjunctions


are "after," "although," "as," "because,"
"before," "how," "if," "once," "since," "than,"
"that," "though," "till," "until," "when," "where,"
"whether," and "while."
Sentences of Subordinating Conjunctions

 After she had learned to drive, Alice felt more


independent.
 If the paperwork arrives on time, your cheque

will be mailed on Tuesday.


 Gerald had to begin his thesis over again

when his computer crashed.


Correlative
Conjunctions
Correlative Conjunctions

Correlative conjunctions always appear in


pairs -- you use them to link equivalent
sentence elements. The most common
correlative conjunctions are "both...and,"
"either...or," "neither...nor,", "not only...but
also," "so...as," and "whether...or."
Sentences Of Corelative Conjunctions

 Both my grandfather and my father worked in


the steel plant.
 Bring either a Jello salad or a potato scallop.
 Corinne is trying to decide whether to go to

medical school or to go to law school.


Conjunctive adverb
Conjunctive adverb

A conjunctive adverb can join two main clauses


using semi colon(;). The conjunctive adverbs
such as however, moreover, nevertheless,
These are used to create complex
relationships between ideas.

Sentences of Conjunctive Adverb
 The dark skies and distant thunder dissuaded
Clarice from her afternoon run; moreover, she
had thirty calculus problems to solve for her
morning class.
 Leon's apartment complex does not allow dogs

over thirty pounds; otherwise, he would have


bought the gangly Great Dane puppy playing in
the pet store window.
 The cat ate a bowlful of tuna; then, to the

squirrels' delight, the fat feline fell asleep in the


rocking chair.
