Scanning and Reading Devices

This document discusses various scanning, audio, video, and camera input devices used for digitizing analog data. It describes 3 types of scanning devices: MICR, OMR, and OCR and how they work. It also discusses audio input devices like sound boards and MIDI boards, as well as microphones. For video input, it covers webcams, video cards like frame grabbers and full motion cards. Finally, it briefly discusses digital cameras and camera phones.

3 types of scanning devices

1. Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR)
- It is a character recognition system that uses magnetizable ink and special
characters. When MICR needs to be read, it passes through a special scanner that
magnetizes the special ink and then translate the magnetic ink information.
2. Optical Mark Recognition (OMR)
- It uses a special scanner that uses “bubbles” marks and convert it into computer
usable form.
3. Optical Charcter Recognition (OCR)
- Software converts scanned text from images to an editable text format that can be
imported into a word processing application and manipulated.

Audio input devices

What are the ways of digitzing audio input?
4

An audion input records analog sound and

translates it for digital storage and
processing. It is a continously variable
wave within certain frequency range.

2 Ways of Digitizing Audio

1. Sound Board: Analog sound from a cassette player or

microphone goes through a circuit board. Sound board
is an add circuit board that converts analog sound to
digital sound and stores it for further processing.
2. Midi Board: It stands for Musical Instrument Digital
Interface — it is exchange for the musical information
between musical instrument.
6

Microphone
- It is also a supporting audio
devices that take varying air
pressure waves created by voice
or other sound source and convert
them into varying electric signal.

Webcam, a video camera attached to a

computer to record live moving images
that can be posted on a website in real
time.

2 types of video card

1. Frame Grabber Video Card
- It can capture and digitize only a single
frame at a time.
2. Full Motion Video Card
-It can convert analog signals at rates up
to 30 frames per second, giving the effect
of a continously flowing motion picture.

Digital camera
It uses a light sensitive processor chip to
capture photographic images in digital form
and store them on a small diskette inserted to
the camera or on flash memory card.

Camera phone
Digital camera technology, has, of
course migrated to cellphone. Enabling
you to visually share your vacation
experiences in real time.
