( TPC 9 )
INTRODUCTION
TO TOURISM
TRANSPORTATION
What is
Transportation?
Transportation refers to carrying tourists from their
place of living to the place where the tourist
attraction is the location.
What are the different
types of Transportation?
AIR WATER

LAND

ROAD RAIL
AIR TRANSPORTATION
Air transport includes moving passengers, and
their personal belongings, from one location to
another by plane. It is one of the major modes of
travel in which tourists are chartered from one
tourist destination to another. Without this
industry, other tourism products, like car rentals,
hotels and resorts, food establishments and tourist
spots, will be at a standstill.
Advantages of Air Transportation

• High Speed
• It offers comfortable and
quick services
• It is used for easy access
Disadvantages of Air Transportation

• Very Costly
• Uncertain and Unreliable
• Small Carrying Capacity
WATER TRANSPORTATION
Water transportation is the intentional movement of
water over large distances. It is the cheapest and the
oldest mode of transport. It has the largest carrying
capacity and is most suitable for carrying bulky goods
over long distances. q It has played a very significant
role in bringing different parts of the world closer and
is indispensable to foreign trade.
Advantages of Water Transportation

• Low Cost
• Suitable for long distance
• Provides Dining Options and
Entertainment
Disadvantages of Water Transportation

• Slow Speed
• More risky
• Unreliable
LAND TRANSPORTATION
Land transport refers to activities of
physical movement of goods and
passengers on land. This movement takes
place on road or rail. So land transport
may further be divided into Road
transport or Rail transport.
ROAD TRANSPORTATION

Road transportation involves moving

passengers and freight with vehicles over a
prepared surface. It is most suited for carrying
goods and people to and from rural areas which
are not served by rail, water or air transport.
Advantages of Road Transportation

• Flexible
• Economical
• Quick transit for short distances
Disadvantages of Road Transportation

• Slow speed
• Limited carrying capacity
• Low level of comfort
RAIL TRANSPORTATION

Rail transport is a means of transferring

passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles
running on rails, which are located on tracks. In
contrast to road transport, where vehicles run
on a prepared flat surface, rail are directionally
guided by the tracks on which they run.
Advantages of Rail Transportation

• Cheaper for long distance travel

• Dependable service
• Quicker than road transportation
Disadvantages of Road Transportation

• Unfit to hilly regions,

• Difficulties in rural areas
• Facilities not always available
ROLE OF TRANSPORTATION
IN TOURISM DEVELOPMENT
• Transportation links tourists with various tourist
attractions. There is a general agreement that tourism
expands more when there are better transportation systems.
• The development of transportation, transportation vehicles,
infrastructure and using new technologies speeds up
the development of tourism.
• Transportation can turn into a separate tourist
attraction element; cruising, Orient Express trains,
boat trips along the river are the best examples to
tourist attractions.
The effective factors in choosing the
transportation mode in tourism are:

• Time
• Distance
• Comfort
• Safety and Security
• Price
