3D-Television: - A Big Failure

1) 3D television was a failure due to poor project planning, expensive incompatible glasses, and health concerns over eye strain. Major TV manufacturers have now stopped 3D support. 2) Key reasons for the failure included introducing 3D TVs at an unfortunate time when customers had recently upgraded to HDTVs, expensive glasses that were incompatible between brands, and health concerns that watching 3D TV strained eyes and caused headaches. 3) Lessons from the failure indicate the importance of proper project planning, quality control, affordable compatible hardware, and delivering new technologies only when customers are ready to adopt them. The technology may reemerge in the future if glasses-free options are improved and health issues addressed.

3D-TELEVISION

-A Big Failure
'3DTV' is the general name for television systems which allow the
viewer to perceive 'depth' in the scene he watches.

HISTORY
• 3D-Television is not a new technology

• A form of 3D TV (known as stereoscopic) was demonstrated by John

Logie Baird, one of the influential inventors of television, in Britain
during 1928.

• After 15 years Baird again discussed with Hankey Television committee

with his updated design but 3D failed again

• The next failure came into light in 21 century when consumers didn’t pay
attention to 3D technology due to some serious reasons.
HOW IDEA OF 3D-TV CAME INTO LIGHT

Adaptation of 3D display technology peaked with the smash hit

release of James Cameroon’s Avatar in 2010.

Due to this, the demand to the see the movies in 3D increased the
3D capable cinema screen’s across the world.

Soon, the idea trickled down to the Living Room with the
Introduction of 3D TV’s.

The days of the new technology were short and by 2015, the focus
had shifted back to the higher resolution conventional Tv’s.
The major TV set manufacturers from LG to
Phillips to Panasonic all wanted in on the
3D TV action.

Then the whole circus gradually collapsed --
3D TVs failed to sell well and create the
multi-billion dollar profits anticipated.

WHY 3D TELEVISION FAILED?

A lot of things came together to doom 3D TV

before it really even started, which can be WHY?
summed up by three factors:

-Unfortunate Timing

-Expensive and Incompatible Glasses

-Extra Costswith your model selected, on the

UNFORTUNATE TIMING.(FIRST
MISTAKE)
The first reason of the failure is choosing Bad timing of introduction of 3D television in
market.

• In US, there was major transition happened where TV broadcasting switched from
analog to digital

• Millions of customers bought HDTV’s in order to keep their older analog Tv’s working
little longer

recently bought

• “Here Project management failed to take the right decision about introduction of new
technology in the market at right time.”
To Be continued……..
THE GLASSES(SECOND NEGATIVE
POINT)
• There were specific standards for glasses that need to be used. Two types of technologies
were followed then: Active Shutter and passive polarization

• Different companies used different systems in their glasses

• Glasses were not interchangeable.

• Customers could not even use glasses with same systems in different brands of 3D television, To
epitomize, Panasonic and Samsung used same system of technologies in their glasses but still
customers couldn’t use glasses interchangeably

• Glasses were very expensive. A large family could hardly adopt new technology
TRY IT YOURSELF WITH THIS HOUSE
• “Here ,bad implementation of project planning regarding cost involved resulted in failure of project.”
IMPACT ON EYES( THIRD NEGATIVE
POINT)
• Watching 3D may cause changes in normal eye functions

• When you see a normal image, your eyes work with various muscles designed to help
the eye move and bring the image into focus.

• Such a change in muscle movement can cause eye strain and fatigue to develop.

• This can lead to headaches, dizziness and nausea

“Here, bad quality management of resources used might be responsible for this

epic failure.”
CONSEQUENCES(MAJOR HIGHLIGHTS)

• 3D's downfall wasn't the rise of a superior rival product but

rather a firm rejection from would-be customers

• 3D's future remains uncertain

• TV brands will be reluctant to invest further in the technology

until there's some significant change in consumers' buying
choices.

• The televisions of tomorrow set to be defined by high-resolution

4K displays, curved screens and new technologies like HDR
HOW MIGHT THIS FAILURE BE PREVENTED?

Proper Project Planning:

- Project management involves proper project planning which ensures when, how, and who
will take the necessary actions to accomplish established objectives.

- Financial Resource planning is crucial

- Good project planning involves delivering good product in less cost

- In planning phase, the material and technology used in glasses could be chosen In such a
way that which could assist consumers with less expensive choice of glasses .

To Be continued….
QUALITY CONTROL :

• Quality management focuses on providing quality projects to

customers.

• Quality Assurance could be done more precisely in order to

prevent mistakes and defects in products while delivering to
customers

• Software quality assurance (SQA) systematically finds

patterns and the actions needed to improve development
cycles. Finding and fixing picture quality in 3D television can
carry unintended consequences; it is possible to fix one thing,
yet break other features at the same time
LESSONS!
• A lack of quality content may destroy any enthusiasm for the new technology
Bad picture quality of 3D television which puts harmful effect on
consumer’s eyes has played main role of this “Epic failure”
• Adapting new technology relies upon the simplicity
Wearing glasses by all family members for watching television was not
welcoming idea.
Affordability
Glasses worth $100 per single pair really makes someone to think twice why
he/she would spend so much .
Thus, expensive hardware with huge drawbacks would prevent adoption.
WOULD IT RE-EMERGE?

• We may see 3D – Television in market in future if manufacturers refine their glass

free technology

• Further Improvements in picture depth may help this technology to re-emerge

• Launching this technology when people will ready to switch their interests
