TSLB3113 Tutorial Task Topic 3 Week 5: Approaches To Language Testing

The document discusses four approaches to language testing: 1) Essay-translation approach which uses subjective judgment and focuses on literary understanding. 2) Structuralist approach which can objectively measure mastery of language elements like phonology and grammar. 3) Integrative approach which tests without separating skills and takes a holistic view of proficiency. 4) Communicative approach which tests communicative ability through appropriateness over grammatical correctness. It then notes challenges implementing the integrative and communicative approaches in primary ESL classrooms, such as still needing to measure individual skills based on student need, and difficulties achieving communicative competence without grammar mastery or potential cultural bias affecting test

Challenges of implementing the integrative and communicative
language testing approach in primary ESL classrooms
Integrative

• Even if many think that measuring integrated skills is better, sometimes there
is a need to consider the importance of measuring skills based on students’
need, such as writing only, speaking only, etc

Communicative

• this approach does not emphasize learning structural grammar, yet it may be
difficult to achieve communicative competence without a considerable mastery
of the grammar of a language
• It is possible for cultural bias to affect the reliability of the tests being
administered.
