PITCHER PLANT

CANNERY S. OLEZA
BS PSYCHOLOGY 3
Leaf Pitcher- In a few plants like Nepenthes, the leaf-lamina is
modified into a pitcher-like structure. The insect is digested into
the inner walls of the pitcher which secretes a digestive fluid into
the pitcher cavity.

Insect-trapping leaves-in carnivorous plants, leaves modified for

attracting, trapping, and digesting animals. These adaptations
range from sticky flypaper surfaces to vatlike leaves.
Leaf-Pitcher
● In insectivorous plants, the leaves are especially adapted to catch and digest insects to
fulfil their nitrogen requirement.
● This is a device to catch insects for fulfilling the deficiency of nitrogen in the medium
where plant is growing.
● Nepenthes, also called pitcher-plant bears special type of leaves. Leaf-base is winged,
petiole is tendrillar and lamina is modified into pitcher-like structure having a coloured
lid which attracts the insects and keeps the pitchei closed during immaturity.
● The rim of the pitcher is internally lined by backwardly directed hair and a large
number of minute scales due to which the insect slips and is captured.
● The inner walls of the pitcher have glands which secrete a digestive fluid into the cavity
of the pitcher. The insect is digested here and waste material settles down at the
bottom.

Nepenthes muluensis or the

Mulu pitcher-plant, is a tropical
pitcher plant endemic to
Borneo. It grows in highland
habitats at elevations of 1700 to
2400 m above sea level.
The Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula)
is a carnivorous plant native to
subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of
the United States in North Carolina and
South Carolina.

It catches its prey—chiefly insects and

arachnids—with a trapping structure
formed by the terminal portion of each of
the plant's leaves, which is triggered by
tiny hairs (called "trigger hairs" or
"sensitive hairs") on their inner surfaces.
Cobra lilies (Darlingtonia
californica) use window-like
areolae to lure insects into their
hollow leaves.
Nepenthes truncata is a tropical pitcher plant endemic to
the Philippines. It is known from the islands of Dinagat,
Leyte, and Mindanao. The species grows at an elevation of
0–1500 m above sea level. Nepenthes truncata is
characterised by its heart-shaped (truncate) leaves and very
large pitchers, which can reach up to 40 cm in height.
Sarracenia is a genus comprising 8 to 11
species of North American pitcher plants,
commonly called trumpet pitchers. The
genus belongs to the family
Sarraceniaceae, which also contain the
closely allied genera Darlingtonia and
Heliamphora.

The plant's leaves have evolved into a

funnel or pitcher shape in order to trap
insects.
