VARIATIONS

DIRECT VARIATION
If the ratio between two quantities is
constant, it means that one quantity
varies directly as the other quantity, or
the 2 quantities are in direct variation.

In symbol, y = kx or k = y/x , where k is

the constant of variation.

So as the value of x increases, then y also

increases. As x decreases, y also
decreases.
A direct variation may also relate
four quantities in proportion as
x1 = y1
x2 y2 or x1y2 = x2y1
Example:
1 = 12
80 Y
y = (12)(80)
y = 960
Example:
Find k, if y varies directly as x, and y
= 24 when x = 3.
Solution:
y = kx
24 = k(3)
24 = k
3
k=8
Example:
If y varies directly as x, and y = 40
when x = 8. find y when x = 30.
Solution:
y = kx
40 = k(8)
40 = k
8
k=5
y = kx
y = (5)(30)
y = 150
DIRECT SQUARE VARIATION
For direct square variation, one quantity
varies directly as the square of the other
quantity.

In symbol, y = kx2 or k = y/x2 , where k is

the constant of variation.
Example:
The distance (S) of a free falling
body varies directly as the square of
the time (t) during which the body
falls.
Answer:
S = kt2
Example:
If y varies directly as to the square of
x, and y = 32 when x = 2. find y when x
= 5.
Solution:
y = kx2
32 = k(2) 2
32 = k(4)
32 = k(4)
4
k=8
y = kx 2
y = (8)(5) 2
y = (8)(25)
y = 200
INVERSE VARIATION
Whenever the product of corresponding
values of two quantities is constant, then
one quantity varies inversely as the
other.

In symbol, xy = k or y = k/x , where k is

the constant of variation.

So as the value of x increases, then y

decreases. As x decreases, y increases.
Example:
The pressure (P) varies inversely as
the volume (V). If P = 6 when V = 24,
find P when V = 36.
Solution:
P = k/V
PV = k
(6)(24) = k
144 = k
k = 144
P = k/V
P = 144
36
P=4
Example:
If y varies inversely as x, and y = 48
when x = 10. find y when x = 32.
Solution:
y = k/x
xy = k
(10)(48) = k
480 = k
y = k/x
y = 480/32
y = 15
JOINT / COMBINED VARIATION
If y varies directly as the product of x
and z, that is, if there is a constant k such
that y = kxz or k = y/xz, then y varies
jointly as x and z.
Example:
The area (A) of a triangle varies
jointly as its base (b) and altitude
(h). The constant of variation is ½.
Answer:
A = kbh
A = ½ bh
Example:
If y varies directly as x and
inversely as z. Make an equation.
Answer:
y = kx/z
Example:
If p varies directly as q and
inversely as r, and p = 4 when q = 2
and r = 6, find p when q = 4 and r = 8.
Solution:
p = kq/r
4 = k (2)
6
(4)(6) = k(2)
24 = k(2)
k = 24/2
k = 12
p = kq/r
p = (12)(4)
8
p = 48
8
p=6
Activity:

Solve the ff.

1.If p varies directly as q and p = 25
when q = 5, find q when p = 120.
2.If y varies directly as x2 , y = 8 when
x = 2, find y when x = 7.
3.Find x when y = 24, given that x
varies inversely as y and x = 132 when
y = 4.
4. If z varies jointly as x and y and
inversely as u, z = 14, x = 4, y = 7, u
= 6. Find the value of y when x =
10, u = 5 and z= 6.
5. If y varies jointly as x and z, find y
if x = 3, z = 9 and k = 6.
