Compare Different Internet Connectivity Types: Name: Arjun Behl

There are several main types of internet connections. Dial-up connections are the slowest but most inexpensive, using phone lines to connect at speeds up to 56kbps. Cable and DSL broadband provide faster speeds from 1.5Mbps to 20Mbps over cable TV or phone lines. Tier connections like T1-T3 are used by ISPs and provide higher speeds by bundling multiple phone channels. Dedicated leased lines provide point-to-point connections at speeds up to several Mbps. Fiber optic provides the highest speeds above 1Gbps for consumers and research while satellite offers speeds around 500kbps for remote areas.

Compare different Internet

Connectivity types

Name:

Arjun behl
Introduction

 Inter connection is basically connection of two or more

networks, usually local area networks so that data can pass
between hosts on the different networks as though they were
one network

 While technology changes at a rapid pace, so with it the

upgradation of Internet connections also takes place

 There are a wide ranges of internet connections and choice of

internet connection by an individual depends on your location
and budget
Types of Internet Connection

 Dialup
 Cable Connection
 DSL Broadband
 Tier Carrier
 Dedicated Leased Line
 ISDN
 Internet over Satellite
 Optical Cable
 Internet2
Dial up Connection
Dial up Connection

 Dial-up connections are the most common type of Internet

Connection for home users.

 Dial-up connections today are considered the slowest but the

reputation of being most inexpensive

 A dialup connection uses a modem, phone line and ISP

 Bandwidth 24 to 56 Kbps.
Dial Up Connection

 Uses POTS (Plain Old Telephone System)

 On the Customer End Modem is connected to a Telephone

Line.

 With an analogue connection, a subscriber connects to the

internet by dialing up a phone number gotten from an ISP

 The modem converts Incoming data from analogue to digital

and the reverse
Cable Connection
Cable Connection
 A Cable modem is a type of internet connection that allows
connection via cable TV lines

 Cable connection offers very fast and reliable connections with

fixed monthly fee

 Cable connections use a different medium to connect you to the

Internet, it will not be affected by use telephone.

 The Cable internet connection uses TV channels for data

transmission.
Cable Connection

 Cable TV uses coaxial cable, which support higher bandwidth

than telephone lines do.

 Broadband is a general name for cable, satellite and DSL types

of internet connections

 Cable broadband Internet connections offer data transfer rates

of approximately 1.5 Mbps up to 7.5 Mbps.
DSL Broadband
DSL Broadband

 Digital Subscriber Line or DSL, uses 2-wire copper telephone

lines and it does not require dialing in to an ISP

 DSL connections are becoming widely available and can

provide you with an excellent Internet connection.

 DSL allows you to use the phone normally while connected to

the internet.

 DSL operates at bandwidth of 512 kbps up to 20 mbps.

DSL Broadband

 The disadvantage of DSL connections can be costlier than

dialup

 There are different categories of DSL and they are SDSL,

VDSL and ADSL.
Tier Carrier

 These types of internet connections are used by Internet

Service Providers (ISP) to connect to the internet backbone

 They are of 3 types T1, T2 and T3.

 The main difference between T-1,T-2,T-4 and T-3 internet

connections are the number of individual channels

 Each individual channel, that can carry both data and voice
traffic, has a band width close to 64Kbps
Tier Connection

 A T-1 line consists of 26 individual channels whereas T-3 has

672 individual channels

 Therefore, if you do the mathematics for T-3 lines, we are

talking about 43Mbps or more. T-5 is up to 400Mbps.
Dedicated Leased Line

 A dedicated leased line is a point-to-point, high speed

communication line that directly connects your computer to
your ISP’s network.

 The speed of internet access depends on the type of leased line

you have.

 Analog leased line can provide maximum bandwidth of 9.6

Kbps.
Dedicated Leased Line

 Digital leased lines can provide bandwidths 64 Kbps

 Dedicate Leased Line is much more expensive than the DSL

and Cable Connection.
ISDN
ISDN
 ISDN Connection are a type of telephone connection that offer data
transfer rates of up to 128 kbps.

 This can be better than dialup, however ISDN connections are

considered still more or less outdated.

 Speed is one advantage ISDN has over telephone line connections

 ISDN network is a switched digital network consisting of ISDN

Switches.
ISDN

 Each node in the network is identified by hierarchical ISDN

address which is of 15 digits.

 It Comes in two “sizes”:

 Basic Rate (Bell Micro Link)
– 2 Bearer channels, each 64Kbps
– 1 Data channel, 16Kbps
 Primary Rate (Bell Mega Link)
- 23 channels, each 64Kbps
– 1 Data channel, 64Kbps
Internet over Satellite

 Satellite connection provides uninterrupted internet connectivity.

 Internet over Satellite uses a communication satellite that is on a

stationary position in orbit.

 Due to the huge distance the data has to be transmitted, the

speed of satellite is a bit lower than Broadband types of internet
connections.

 Average bandwidth at which it operates is 500Kbps

Optical Cable

 Fiber-optic is the most common internet connection

 It has the highest data rates compared to other types of internet

connections after internet2
 It is easy to maintain
 There are three types of fiber-optic internet connections and
they are the plastic optical fiber, single mode, and multimode.

 Its bandwidth is 1Gbps+

Internet2

 Internet2 provides the highest internet speed connectivity

 It was developed by a networking consortium to meet the

high-speed internet demand for research and education work

 It has a speed of 100Gbps

 The use of internet2 is not common
