 Structural approach – three important devices for construction of meaningful sentences:


 Word order
 Structural words
 Inflections
Structural Approach

(1) Word order – change in word order changes meaning


Examples:
 The mosquito is biting Ramu.
 Ramu is biting the mosquito.

(2) Structural words – words useful in forming sentences


Examples – prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions are structural words

(3) Inflections – changes or differences in the form of words to show the function they do.
Examples – variation in numbers, gender, tense etc.
Structural Approach

 Structural approach lays emphasis on situations.

 Real or imaginary situations, but meaningful.

 Oral practice plays an important role – drilling

 Focus is on accent and intonation – phonetics


Structural Approach

Advantages:
 Active methods are used
 Learners activities are more important than the teacher’s.

Disadvantages:
 Overemphasis on oral presentation
 Learners mother tongue is not used for learning the second language.
