History of Drawing
• Throughout human history we have used pictures to convey ideas, express ourselves, present
information, etc. Basically we have used pictures to communicate.
• This was a problem that faced engineers, designers, builders, architects, etc. throughout
history. We didn't have one way of communicating our ideas that everybody understood.
• Gaspard Monge faced this problem when he started as an Engineer in the French Military. He
devised a system that could be used to communicate an object to anyone across the world.
This system is called Orthographic Projection and was quickly adopted by army engineers.

• They used to draw the engineering drawings with pencils.

• But the process was laborious and takes lot of time to
prepare a drawing on the sheet of paper, with proper
dimensions, and appropriate symbols.
• Drafters initially created drawings by hand on a drafting table referred to as a board. An
advance in drafting occurred with the introduction of the drafting machine, which
replaced the T-square, triangles, scales and protractor for creating drawings.
• A designer use to draw the product according to the ideas expressed by the customer
and use to add his/her imagination into the product, and come up with shape, form,
color etc…
• Once it is finished they use to present it to the customer. If the drawing is satisfied by the customer it used to be approved
and sent for final production.
• But, if the customer suggest any modifications the designer has to produce the whole drawing with the modified drawings
from scratch.
• This lead to monotonicity, reduce levels of accuracy, lack of interests etc. which lead to loss productivity in the drawings
• Storage problem, the paper is prone to degrade with time.
What is CAD?

 Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is the technology concerned with the use of computer systems to assist in
the creation, modification, analysis, and optimization of a design. [Groover and Zimmers, 1984]
 Uses Computer-technology To Make Quick And Accurate Drawings, Intricate Designs And Design

Different terminologies related to CAD
• Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) is the technology concerned with the use of computer systems to plan, manage,
inspect and control manufacturing operations directly or indirectly.

• Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) is the technology concerned

with the use of computer systems to analyze CAD geometry, allowing
the designer to simulate and study how the product will behave.
Advantages of CAD
1. Saves time: When you are using the computer-aided design software, it will save your time and you can make better and
more efficient designs in shorter time duration.
2. Easy to edit: When you are making designs, you may find the need to make alterations. When you are using computer-aided
design software, it will be much easier to make any changes because you can fix the errors and modify the drawings easily.
3. Decrease in error percentage: As the CAD software makes use of some of the best tools, the percentage of error that
occurred because of manual designing is significantly reduced.
4. Decrease design effort: When it comes to the amount of effort that was needed for the sake of designing the different
models, it has been reduced significantly because the software automates most of the task.
5. Code re-use: As the entire task is carried out with the help of computer tools, it removes the problem of duplication of labor,
you can copy the different parts of code and design which can then be reused multiple times over and over again.
6. Easy to share: The CAD tools make it easier to save the files and store it in a way that you can use it time and again and send
it without any unwanted hassles too.
7. Improved accuracy: There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that the kind of accuracy that CAD software will offer can
never be achieved by opting for manual drawings. You have tools to measure the precision, skill and accuracy level of the
designs.

Creating a 2D drawing in Onshape
• After creating your account, open the page and create a document file.

• We will end up in work space section

• We now have to create a 3D object for that we have to follow four steps

• Add features to it to convert into the 3D object

• To create a sketch and draw a 2D figure, go to sketch, select a plane and draw what ever you want to draw using draw tool
bar.

Draw tool bar commands

• Line
• Rectangle
• Circe
• Ellipse
• Polygon
• Spline

• Fillet
• Trim
• Offset/slot
• Mirror
