Polygons (Grade 5)

The document provides a lesson plan on polygons that introduces regular and irregular polygons, has students classify examples as such, and has them illustrate real-world examples using different polygon shapes, connecting the math topic to art. The lesson aims to help students understand the properties of polygons, differentiate regular and irregular polygons, and recognize polygons' importance in everyday life and other subjects like art.

GEOMETRY 5:

POLYGONS
Name: Rizza M. Pacheo
BEED - 2
Learning Objectives:
The learners should be able to:
• Classify the properties of polygons (regular and irregular
polygons).
• Illustrate polygons involving regular and irregular
according to their features (number of sides, angles and
length of sides)
• Recognize polygons in any art forms or in real-life events.
Activating Prior Knowledge
Think-Pair-Share
• During this activity, learners will have individual time to think about a
question related to the topic of Polygons. They will pair up with a partner
to share their thoughts. The given time for them will be 5 minutes only.
• Example of a questions that could be ask to the learners are, what are all
the things you know about squares, triangles and quadrilateral? or what
do you already know about the angles and sides of a shape?
• Then Finally, the pairs will select one major idea to share with the whole
class.
Motivation
Let the learners observe the pictures below.
• Do you know what shapes 1st Picture

are there in the first picture?

• How about the second picture?
Have you seen that kind of a 2nd Picture
shapes before?
• What are their differences?
Lesson development
Vocabulary Concepts:
Polygons - polygon can be defined as a flat or plane, two-
dimensional closed shape with straight sides. It does not have
curved sides.
2 main types:
Regular Polygons – Polygons that have equal sides and angles
Irregular Polygons – Polygons with unequal sides and angles
Lesson development
• Examples of Regular and Irregular Polygons:
Lesson development
Exercise: Classify each polygon as Regular or Irregular.
Write your answer below the polygons.
Activities
• The learners will illustrate polygons that can be form of an
object or living things that they see in the surroundings,
involving the regular and irregular polygons according to
their features (number of sides, length of sides and number
of angles).
• Each learner will present their work in front of the class and
tell why did they choose to do that kind of illustration using
polygons.
Lesson across discipline
Can we connect our lesson to other subject?
If yes, what subject can we link to it? Why?
Subject: Arts
How are polygons can be apply in real-life?
Synthesis
Ask the learners what have they learn from today’s
activity/lesson.
• Can you now differentiate and classify the properties of
polygons?
• How can you tell a regular shape from an irregular shape?
• Do you appreciate the importance of polygons in our
everyday life? Why?
