6
HAZARD
is a source of potential damage, harm, or
unfavorable health effects
Electricity, chemicals, means of
transport, tools and clothing may pose as
hazards.
7
HOW CAN WE
AVOID
HAZARDS?
8
Electrical Hazard
> electricity can cause accidents such as
electrocution, explosions, and fires, which may
result in serious injuries.
Be sure to observe these safety precautions:
Inspect wirings of all equipment before and after use.
If electrical cords have damaged parts (e.g. exposed wires), conduct
immediate repair.
If needed, request for the installation of outlets to minimize the use of
excessive extension cords.
Always use safety switches.
9
Chemical Hazard
> minimize the chances of spilling liquids on
or near supplies and equipment. Designate a
safe area for storage and close containers
properly after use
Transportation Hazard
> transporting excessively heavy materials and
equipment will require mechanical support.
Never carry them with your bare hands; use
pushcarts instead.
10
Improper use of hand tools
– tools are categorized according to their
functions: cutting, boring, driving, joining,
and measuring. Knowing how to use these
tools properly will help in preventing
injuries. Tools should be taken care of to
maintain their good condition and efficiency.
11
Clothing hazard
> in the field of electronics operations, using
your personal protective equipment or PPE
is crucial in ensuring your well-being. Avoid
wearing loose clothing, jewelry, and other
articles that may hinder you from working
correctly and safely.
12
Workplace violence
> there are unexpected instances when
misunderstandings are blown out of
proportion, so you must establish good
communication with your co-workers to
prevent the possibility of violence.
Whenever conflicts arise, talk with
concerned parties and address the problems
immediately.

GROUP ACTIVITY:
Group yourselves according to your performance task groupings.
Choose one activity below and do it with your group. Present your
output in class.
1. Make a new signage that tell workers to observe hazard warnings. Be
creative.
2. Prepare a poster with a set of rules for an electronics shop based on
the 5S approach. Be creative.
3. Perform a 2-minute news flash showing the implications of hazards.
4. Perform a 2-minute skit showing the application of the 5S approach in
the electronics industry.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH
According to World Health Organization (WHO), it
deals with all aspects of health and safety in the
workplace and has a strong focus on primary
prevention of hazard.
33
HOW to maintain optimal health and safety in the
workplace
1. Passages and hallways must be free from any obstructions that may
prevent the workers from getting out of the premises in case of
emergency.
2. Electrical wiring and equipment must always be checked, and
damaged wires and parts replaced as soon as possible.
3. All electronic hand tools must be in excellent condition.
4. Posting safety signs is required. Important instructions concerning
health and safety in the working areas must be properly disseminated
and explained to everyone.
34
HOW to maintain optimal health and safety in the
workplace
5. When in doubt, ask questions regarding how things must be used
or done to avoid accidents caused by errors.
6. In case of unwanted, eventualities, always notify your superiors.
7. Put tools and supplies in their proper storage places after use.
8. Keep the working environment clean and organized.
35
Personal protective equipment
× refers to articles which are designed to provide workers the
protection they need when working.
× the main purpose of the PPE is to reduce workers’ exposure to
different kinds of hazards and thus prevent sickness, injuries, or
even death.
36
protection from falling
× a high percentage of fatalities at work are
caused by falling from buildings and houses. A
harness is a protective gear that restrains from
a worker while climbing or reaching a
particular height.
37
protection for the head
× there is a wide range of hazards that can
seriously injure the head.
× a hard hat protects the head from potential
injury from falling objects.
× a face shield protects the face from flying
objects, chemical splashes, or infectious fluid.
× Goggles protect the eyes from small particles,
dust, water or chemicals from hurting the eye.
38
protection for the body
× a coverall or boiler suit is a one-piece outfit
that covers and protects the whole body.
39
protection for the hands and feet
× Safety footwear or steel-toe boots are made with steel
reinforcement in the toes to protect the feet from falling objects.
× Gloves guard hands against damage and abrasion caused by
friction or harmful characteristics.
