Matrix and Determinant: Presented By: Sudip Shrestha Shuvekshya Bhattrai Shrisha Tuladhar

This document provides an introduction to matrices and determinants. It defines what a matrix is, lists the major types of matrices, and describes how to perform operations like addition, subtraction, and multiplication on matrices. It also defines what a determinant is, noting that only square matrices have determinants. It lists some key properties of determinants, such as how the value changes when rows/columns are interchanged or elements are multiplied by constants.

MATRIX AND

DETERMINANT
PRESENTED BY: SUDIP SHRESTHA
SHUVEKSHYA BHATTRAI
SHRISHA TULADHAR
GROUP: E
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We would like to express our special

thanks of gratitude to our respectable Mathematics
teacher Mr. Bawanand Chaudhary, Mr. Bal
Krishna Bhatta and the entire Uniglobe College for
providing us with this wonderful opportunity to
present ourselves on this topic “ Matrix and
Determinant”.
We extend our heartiest thanks to our
mentor for his role in making us understand this
topic that made this presentation a success. We did
many researches and came to know a lot of things.
We are really thankful for that.

INTRODUCTION

TYPES

DETERMINANT

PROPERTIES
INTRODUACTION TO MATRIX

•A matrix is a rectangular array of numbers

arranged in rows and column and are enclosed by a
pair of bracket and is subjected to certain rules.
•The dimension of a matrix are stated “m × n”
where “m” is the number of rows and “n” is the
number if columns.
MAJOR TYPES OF MATRIX

Row Matrix

Column matrix
Zero or null
matrix
Square matrix

Unit matrix
ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF MATRIX

• Two matrices may be added or

subtracted if they are in same order.
• Simply add or subtract the corresponding
elements.
MATRIX MULTIPLICATION

• You can multiply matrices only if the

number of columns in the first matrix
equals the number of rows in the
second matrix.
• Take the number in the first row of
matrix. Multiply each number by its
corresponding number in the first
column of matrix and total these
products.
TRANSPOSE OF A MATRIX

• The matrix obtained by

interchanging the rows and columns
of a matrix A is called the transpose
of A (written as AT )
INVERSE OF A MATRIX
• Let A be any square matrix of order n.
The n- square matix B of the same order
is called inverse of A if AB =BA=I.
• It is denoted by  A−1.
• Condition: determinant should not be
zero.
DETERMINANT

• A determinant is a real number

associated with a matrix. Only square
matrices have a determinant.
• The symbol for determinant can be
the phrase “det” in front of a matrix
variable, det(A) or vertical bars
around a matrix |A|
PATTERNS OF SIGNS
PROPERTIES PF DETERMINANT
1. The value od determinant remains
unchanged if corresponding rows and
columns are interchanged i.e.
| AT | = A
2. If each element in a row and column is
zero, the value of determinant is zero.
3. If any two adjacent rows or columns of a
determinant are interchanged, the
determinant value changes by sign.
4. If any two rows and columns are identical, the value of
determinant is zero.
5. If all the elements of a row and column is multiplied by a
constant, the value of the determinant is multiplied by the same
constant.
6. If each element in a row or column in the sum of two terms,
the determinant can be written as the sum of two determinants.
