Characters and characterization

A character is a person or being in a story


2 types of character
1. Protagonist – the hero of the story
2. Antagonist –villain of the story
Characterization deals with how the characters
of the story are described
Point of View
 point of view is the mode of narration that an
author employs to let the readers “hear” and “see”
what takes place in a story, poem, or essay.
Major kinds of Point of View
 First person point of view involves the use of either of the two pronouns “I” or
“we.”
 “I felt like I was getting drowned with shame and disgrace.”
 Second person point of view employs the pronoun “you.”
 “Sometimes you cannot clearly discern between anger and frustration.”
 Third person point of view uses pronouns like “he,” “she,” “it,” “they,” or a
name.
 “ Stewart is a principled man. He acts by the book and never lets you
deceive him easily.”
Plot and Plot Structure

The plot is the main sequence of events that make up


the story. In short stories the plot is usually centered
around one experience or significant moment. 

Plot Structure
1. Introduction: It is the beginning of the story, in which
the character and setting are described by the author.

2.Rising action: It is where the events of the story have


become a little complicated, and the conflict of the story
is revealed.

Setting and Atmosphere

A setting is where and when a story is set. it is the


time and geographic location within a narrative,
either nonfiction or fiction.
Atmosphere
 Atmosphere is the overall mood of a story
or poem. It’s usually something readers
can’t quite put their finger on – not a motif
or a theme, but a “feel” that readers get as
they read. It’s very difficult to define, but
you know an atmosphere when you read it.

struggle between two opposing forces, usually a
protagonist and an antagonist.

 Irony is
a literary device in which
contradictory statements or situations
reveal a reality that is different from what
appears to be true.
Situational and dramatic irony

 Situational Irony
 Iswhen the exact opposite of what is expected to
happen.
 Dramatic Irony
 Occurs when the audience know something that the
characters of the story are not aware of.
