Why do we study History?
To learn about the past.
As you study History,
you learn about the
challenges and achievements
of people in different periods
of time. This knowledge about
the past will explain to you
what we have today so that
the present will be much
clearer.
To appreciate you heritage.
Knowledge of History will
give you an even greater
appreciation of your heritage.
Among your legacies are our
independence gained from the
Spaniards and the Americans, our
Baybayin even before the alphabet.
You will come to value them from
the past that are the foundation of
your culture & tradition.
To broaden your perspectives.
History introduces you to places
and societies throughout our country.
Knowledge of other people and their
cultures will give you a better
perspectives of the times in which you
live.
To acquire background for critical
thinking.
Problems and their solutions are
central to any survey of history. You will
have many opportunities to uncover the
roots of present-day issues. Your
understanding of the past will enhance your
ability to evaluate and deal effectively with
the concerns of your own times.

They shall inculcate patriotism and nationalism,

appreciation of the role of national heroes in the
historical development of the country, teach the rights

History can be defined in a number of ways:
• the study of man’s

• is a record of what human beings have done on earth
• it is an unending dialogue between the present & the past

NO DOCUMENT, NO HISTORY
 It means that unless a written document
can prove a certain historical event, then it
cannot be considered as a historical fact.

Criticisms of History

some records that has been lost or destroyed.

may never be known.

3. It helps us understand our problems better.
4. It gives us a picture of how we have become what we are.

The study of history is generally

Pre-historic Period
- it is that long period in History
that happened before the
invention of writing. It is further
sub-divided into 3:

A. Paleolithic Period (OSA)

C. Age of Metals
Historic Period
- it is the period that happened
after writing was invented. The
historic Period is divided into 3:
A.Ancient Period (Ancient
Civilization)
B.Medieval Period (Middle
Ages)
C.Modern Times

There are two (2) categories of History

1. Oral History – records of man’s past


events handed down orally.
2. Written History – records of man’s past
events passed on through documents

3. Time – Refers not just to hours nor dates but it
