The Motor effect (Higher only)
• 6 - Describe the force between a magnet and
a current-carrying conductor, and use
Fleming’s left-hand rule to work out its
direction.
• 8 - Explain why there is a force on a current-
carrying wire in a magnetic field.
Electric and Magnetic Fields
• Starter: draw a bar magnet and add any
important information you feel is relevant...
Electromagnets:
• A coil of insulated wire is wrapped around an iron
core
• An electric current is passed through the wire
• A magnetic field is produced in the iron core
• Benefits?
• Why is the wire insulated?
• What factors affect the strength of the
electromagnet?

How do we calculate the size of the force?
• Think of the factors affecting the force on a
current-carrying wire
• Force on a conductor (at right angles to a
magnetic field) carrying a current (N)
• = magnetic flux density (T) x current (A) x length (m)
• Research – find the definition of one ampere (1
amp)
• Force on a conductor (at right angles to a

• F = BIL
• Answer questions 1 and 4 from page 127
When a wire carrying a current
is placed in a magnetic field,
it experiences a force.
THE FORCE ON THE WIRE
IS AT 90O TO BOTH THE
WIRE AND TO THE
MAGNETIC FIELD
The force gets bigger if the
CURRENT in the wire is
increased.
The force gets bigger if the
MAGNETIC FIELD is
increased.
How could you increase the
strength of the force?
More current TRUE/FALSE
More resistance TRUE/FALSE
Stronger magnetic TRUE/FALSE

Force
down
The diagram shows the forces
acting on the two side arms of
the coil.
These forces are just the normal
forces which act on any current
in a magnetic field.
Because the coil is on a spindle,
and the forces act ONE UP and
ROTATES
ONE DOWN, the coil_________.
The direction of the motor
can be reversed by either;
Changing the direction of the
current
Swapping the magnetic poles
over.
INCREASING THE SPEED
More current
More turns on the coil
Stronger magnetic field
A soft iron core in the coil
