What is a Computer?

computer is an electronic device that is designed to

work with information.
The Computer…
1. Takes in information, then…
2. Processes the information, and then…
3. Displays the results.
Functionalities of a computer

Any digital computer carries out five functions in gross

terms:
 Takes data as input.
 Stores the data/instructions in its memory and use them
when required.
 Processes the data and converts it into useful
information.
 Generates the output
 Controls all the above four steps
Cont…
Types of a Computer
There are two main types of computers, desktops and
laptops. However, all computers have the following
components:
Computer Desktop
Cont…

Desktop – The computer screen or background that

contains components such as the Taskbar, My Computer,
Recycle Bins icons, any other shortcut icons, and any Windows
and Dialog Boxes that have been opened.
Laptop computer
cont…
 is a portable computer.
 personal computer that can be easily carried and used in a
variety of locations.
 run the same software and applications in PCs
cont….

 Computers allow people with disabilities to do normal

activities.
 Shopping online

 Playing games with other people

 Work from home

 Entertainment such as listening to music, watching

videos etc.
 Enable communication through the use of

(electronic mails) e-mails , chats etc.

Computer Components

Hardware
Software
Hardware

Computer hardware is the collection of physical

elements "Tangible objects”
 that constitutes a computer system.
The actual machinery, wires, transistors, and
circuits … etc.

THE MONITOR
The monitor looks like a television screen and is where
you see what is happening on your computer. By using
shadows and graphics with over a million different
colors, much of what you see will appear 3-
dimensional. Think of this as the ‘face’ of the computer.
THE KEYBOARD
Cont…

The following is a list of commonly used keys that have

special functions
1. Backspace: This key deletes letters backward.
2. Delete: This key deletes letters forward.
3. Shift: This key, when pressed WITH another key,
will perform a secondary function.
4. Spacebar: This key enters a space between words
or letters.

another key, performs a shortcut.
8 Enter: This key either gives you a new line, or
executes a command (pressed in word processing
program, it begins a new line).
Cont…

9 Number Keypad: These are exactly the same as the

numbers at the top of the keyboard; some people just
find them easier to use in this position.
10. Arrow Keys: Like the mouse, these keys are used
to navigate through a document or page.

4. Double-Clicking the RIGHT mouse button does not
do anything.
Hard disk
stores and provides relatively quick access to large
amounts of data.
Stores data on an electromagnetically charged
surface or set of surfaces
Software

Software is a generic term for organized

collections of computer data and
instructions, often broken into two major
categories two major categories:
1. system software
2. application software
System software
Known as Operating System
is responsible for controlling, integrating, and managing
the individual hardware components of a computer
system
Windows is an example of OS.
Application software
is used to accomplish specific tasks other than just running the
computer system.
It may consist of:
 a single program, such as an image viewer;
 a small collection of programs (often called a software
package) that work closely together to accomplish a task,
such as a spreadsheet or text processing system;
 a larger collection (often called a software suite) of related
but independent programs and packages that have a common
user interface or shared data format, such as Microsoft
Office,
The Operating System

Computers without operating systems are exactly like

televisions without a signal: It will turn on, but you will
be looking at a blank screen with no hope of interacting
with it (the lights are on, but nobody’s home)! The most
popular operating system is “Microsoft Windows,” and
it is utilized by most personal computer (PC) users
class. There are many different versions of Microsoft
Windows, and a new version is released every couple of
years (just like car models).
