AND STUDENTS
SYSTEM SOFTWARE
System software consists of programs that control the operations of
the computer and its devices.
System software serves as the interface between the user, the
application software, and the hardware.
An operating system is one type of system software which
contains instructions that coordinate all of the activities of the
computer hardware devices.
The operating system also contains instructions that allow the user
to run the application software.
SYSTEM SOFTWARE (CONT.)
The operating system tells the computer how to perform functions such as
transferring data between the input/output devices and computer memory,
processing program instructions, communicating with the computer hardware
and other software.
The operating system remains in the computer memory and it continues to
run while the computer is turned on.
The software that you would like to install or run must be compatible with
the operating system you are currently using.
This is the same for hardware, wherein the correct drivers must be installed
in order for the operating system to communicate properly with the hardware.
OPERATING SYSTEMS Educational Technology 2
STAND ALONE OPERATING
SYSTEMS
Stand-Alone Operating Systems are complete operating systems
that work on a desktop computer, notebook computer or all-in-one
device.
Some of the most popular operating systems in use today are as
follows:
1. Windows
2. Mac OS
3. Ubuntu
WINDOWS
Microsoft Windows is the most known
operating system.
Many versions have been out in the
market to help users perform computer-
based tasks with more convenience.
One of its key features is backwards
compatibility which means applications
made for Windows XP will still work on
Windows 10.
WINDOWS 10
MAC OS
This operating system is only available
for computers which are manufactured
by Apple.
Mac OS has many features which
enhance browsing, online shopping and
interacting with applications.
MACOS HIGH SIERRA
UBUNTU
Ubuntu is a free and open source
operating system and Linux distribution
based on Debian.
New releases of Ubuntu occur every six
months, while long-term support (LTS)
releases occur every two years.
Ubuntu is the most popular operating
system for the cloud.

EMBEDDED OPERATING
SYSTEMS
This kind of operating system resides in an internal chip rather than a hard drive.
This is the kind of operating system used on mobile devices and other portable
electronics.
Today’s embedded operating systems recognize multiple points of contact and
allow users to interact with the device using a stylus or finger.
The three popular embedded operating systems today are:
1. Android
2. iOS
3. Blackberry OS
ANDROID
Android is a mobile operating system
developed by Google.
Based on the Linux kernel and designed
primarily for touchscreen mobile
devices such as smartphones and tablets.
Developed by Google and later the
Open Handset Alliance (OHA).
Android is currently the most popular
operating system in the world.
ANDROID 8.0 “OREO”
IOS
iOS (formerly iPhone OS) is a mobile
operating system created and developed
by Apple Inc. exclusively for its
hardware.
It is the operating system that presently
powers many of the company's mobile
devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and
iPod Touch.
It is the second most popular mobile
operating system globally after Android.
iOS 11
BLACKBERRY OS
BlackBerry 10 is a proprietary mobile
operating system for the BlackBerry line
of smartphones, both developed by
BlackBerry Limited.
It supports the application
framework Qt (version 4.8) and features
an Android runtime to run Android
applications.
BlackBerry 10 is based on QNX, a
Unix-like operating system.
BLACKBERRY 10
EMERGING OPERATING
SYSTEMS
The emerging operating system like
that of Google’s Chrome OS has the
potential to revolutionize computing.
Google Chrome OS is based on Google
Android which is designed to work
exclusively with web-based and cloud-
based applications and to run on
Chromebook computers.
